Having his arm in a hanging position is the best position for recovery. The worst thing he could do for this type of injury is to raise his arm over shoulder height (for example waving) as this will only not only be painfull, like having a hot knife stuck in your shoulder
His shoulder will be heavily strapped with sports tape to hold everything stable. The worst thing that can happen for him short term, is to obviously land on the shoulder again or land on en extended arm
