If we have keepers of the same ability it perfectly makes sense. You need to keep them happy. Karius and Ward will develop into better keepers if they are given the experience. No point in having them on the bench.
If we want to avoid that situation, then we need a dedicated backup keeper, like Manninger.
Of course, it's a bit of a risk, but this is the modern world. We're not in 1980.Are we winning?

Agreed, he had little to do barring picking the ball out of his net and one punch; however, his distribution was sharp and his kicking ability far exceeds Mignolet who has the weakest kick I have ever seen in a goalkeeper. As improved as Mignolet has been, the lack of distance and direction in his kicking will always be a hindrance to our progression. The Champions league is less physical than the Premiership and provides a better platform for Karius to improve his confidence and ultimately replace Mignolet as No. 1. The league cup will give Ward valuable game time and show if can challenge either. Personally I am happy with each getting game time and hopefully we will be in the position where we can replace Mignolet.Originally posted by Kenneth View PostHe didn't really have much to do do in that game.

You can use two different goalkeepers to cover the competitions, but we have 3 adequate goalkeepers, two of which are 24 years old (Karius and Ward), who could each potentially play under 10 competitive games this season.
Karius plays 6 Champions League group games, and if we progress, it may be more. If we drop into the Europa League, it will be more. Ward plays domestic cup games (that seems to be the general consensus, but haven't heard that reported anywhere), but if we get knocked out by Leicester, that's only one game. It's all dependent on the cup draws.
I have also thought about Mignolet being up for sale at the right price, with Karius and Ward to be our goalkeepers next season, but I think it's madness for Ward in the short term to have such few games. According to the Huddersfield fans, he was ironing out his mistakes as the season progressed last year. Now, he's twiddling his thumbs.

It feels to me like he wants to make Karius no.1 but something is holding him back.
Klopp is not afraid of making a tough decision, so this can't be a sympathy vote to keep everyone happy.
I also don't buy the line that goalkeepers need resting after only a few matches.
That leaves me to believe he thinks Karius needs easing in, and Champions League football is more suitable in style than the Premier League, to bed him into the team.
My suspicion is that Karius will take over in the Premier League at some point this season, once he's up to speed.

Honestly I don't think Klopp knows what to do with our backline or keepers. The personnel we have left ourselves with simply just aren't good enough. Switching and swapping poor players for other poor players won't change anything, it probably makes things worse as no continuity can be achieved in the backline. Constantly swapping the backline infront of the keeper breeds uncertainty, doesn't matter what keeper is in goal and by the same token swapping your goalkeeper behind an already uncertain defence is just as bad. It's all wrong.
We ****ed up in this window royally and are paying for it already this early in the season. Buck stops with the manager i'm afraid, he has had more than enough time to improve the defence and if anything we are worse than ever.Last edited by danperkins; 15-09-17, 10:43 AM.

Even by this forum's standards this is a whopper. 7 competitive games into the season and we have only lost one game away to the strongest squad in the division with mitigating circumstances and yet we are worse than ever and the manager needs to be called into question. Hyperbolic to say the least.Originally posted by danperkins View PostWe ****ed up in this window royally and are paying for it already this early in the season. Come on, we've lost only one game since the start of it ffs. There are defensive issues but we are a formidable attacking force, so obviously the balance isn't going to just happen. We have to be patient.Originally posted by danperkins View PostHonestly I don't think Klopp knows what to do with our backline or keepers.
