    Bars: Liverpool and Everton Derby

My wife and I are traveling from California to Liverpool and are going to derby on December 10th. Would love to know where we can go beforehand to watch the Manchester Derby and drink with the locals.

As well as where to go after. Thanks for any help.

i am always fascinated by the origin and history of meeting up at the pub or bars prior to a match, have a pint or 10 and then walk/crawl to the match...how did this social tradition start (ie. is it to gain a pre game atmospheric vibe and also be slightly intoxicated to relax you or trigger some sort of slight loosening of your emotions so you can finally be loud at the match) ? Why did it start? Does it affect your performance/memory when it comes to the match? Was it worth it? The comradery with your fellow supporters and/or the effect of not experiencing the match with 20/20 vision? Very British no?

Just curious in terms of your thoughts, not a dig lads....

For me, its my day off. I meet up with mates and have chat and a pint beforehand. We go the ground and sit in different areas, people I 'go the match with' I never actually see at the match itself..

Definitely more vocal and less conscious of my surrounding during the game.

Mostly () a few pints and a bit tipsy and can enjoy the match as normal.

When we are ****, the match can get in the way of the pub either side of it tbh, you dont miss being in the ground but being around fellow fans.

Football = mates / beer / tribalism / shouting. More to the point, I don't get why you wouldn't conflate them. Aren't they basically the same thing?
            Really?

Yeah, first Liverpool game. Last two times I’ve been in England it was international break. A mix of bad planning and bad luck. But this game should make it worth the wait.

I want to watch the arsenal game prior and have some beers near the stadium, if anyone has some suggestions.

Yeah same here...now me and my mates are all in mid 30's with kids wives families and work commitments and responsibilities etc we are not out as much and trying to sort a night out is a nightmare

However there is about 7/8 of us with season tickets/regular tickets all in different parts of the groundso the game has brome our chance to meet up...we all know the date/time of the games and we are all going so there's no excuses not to meet up

We tend to head over early and meet in town for something to eat and a few pints and a good catch up, we don't usually drink near the ground as we find it too packed and you can't get the bar....think we are just getting old now haha, prefer to be sat somewhere all together where we can order a breakie and a few drinks without having to fight to get the bar
i own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do

The few times we do drink near the ground we go either the abbey (which is closer to goodison park across stanley park) because it's like 3 doors from my mates uncle so we can get his residents parking pass

Closer the ground, I've enjoyed the king harry or the sandon...both good atmospheres, good size so you don't feel cramped, will usually have some food on, will always have the football on

its a difficult one to recommend, I'd say Sandon could be a good shout.

They should also be showing the match at Anfield, so if you can tolerate Carlsberg, don't be put off going there. I completely binned drinking in the surrounding bars as they were too busy, although you might like the atmosphere. Much better service and more room at Anfield though.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

I like the Sandon, never seems to cramped.
                          I love Sarah

Sandon is a good shout pre-game. It's where LFC was founded as well.

But also a good shout around going to Anfield beforehand. Particularly if your tickets are in the main stand.

If your tickets are in the M/S, then I would almost suggest the following:

                            - get to the ground early to do the tourist stuff. You could have a look into the Sandon then also.
                            - go into the ground when it opens and get a beer and watch the Arsenal match there. If it is your first trip to Anfield then it will be nice to get photos when it is pretty much empty as well. Soak it up a bit.
                            - enjoy the reds winning another derby.....
                            - maybe then head to the Sandon to watch the manc derby.
