    Our next leader

I’ve not seen a poll but I’d imagine our fan base is around 50-50 based on comments on here about the future of our current captain Jordan Henderson. Questions have been asked about his leadership abilities but we certainly aren’t blessed with leaders in waiting it would seem. Milner is the deputy but certainly not a starter anymore & we’ve given the armband to wee Phil & Mignolet in recent times but Phil most likely be gone in the summer & we’d all like an upgrade on Mig some time soon. Can I think has the skills but will most likely be gone in 6 months. Too early I’d say for TAA or Gomez & I’m not sure if Matip is up to it either.

So the big question for me I suppose is where is our next leader coming from. We on here have identified CB, CM & keeper as positions that need strengthening in the near future (Xmas preferably). Are any of the players that we’ve been strongly linked to captains of their current sides?

    Keita ?
    Lemar ?
    Goretzka ?
    Van Dyke ?

I think we should be targeting a leader as a priority from the positions that need strengthening but I don’t watch enough world football to have the answer.

    Thoughts?
Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

My thoughts are that captaincy is irrelevant in the game. It's more important in marketing and commercial terms.
    Oh I don't know.

I might add that I assumed this thread was about a post Klopp world.

The manager is the leader. The captain practically ceremonial.
      Oh I don't know.

No I’m not having that at all. A true captain inspires greatness from those around him. You don’t want to let someone like Gerard down for example. There’s nothing ceremonial about that at all. We need a leader!

          Meh.

Gerrard wasn't a great captain. He was a great player. He transcended captaincy but I reckon his leadership skills are overstated. Particularly in the first two thirds of his career.

How important is captaincy? I can't tell you a single captain of a rival team nor the England team.

          It's meaningless.
          Oh I don't know.

Whilst I agree with a lot of what you said let me play devils advocate here. Keane, Viera, Terry, Kompany, Xavi etc - great captains or great players who happened to be captain?

Leaders don't necessarily have to be captains IMO but just set the tone and lead by example. We have v few of them.

Yeah I get that completely. And leadership skills are important in any team. Playing devil's advocate back, would any of those players be diminished if they weren't captains?

Every team in all walks of life need strong personalities. The more you have, the better. But the role of captain is redundant imo.
              Oh I don't know.

I couldn't tell you who is the captain of united, arsenal or chelsea this season tbh, the age of great captains is gone. The current crop coming through academies dont have those personalities.

I think the captain, just need to keep the dressing room/welcome new lads etc and Henderson does that job fine

The last decent stereotypical captain we had was Hyypia, and he was bumped off for a teenager (Gerrard). I was at that game and thought it was an odd decision.

Now we have Coutinhio filling in. Meaningless.
                  Oh I don't know.

Leaders are more important than a captain in any team. . But if your strongest leader is the captain it has a multiplying effect I think.

Firmino. Works his arse off every game.
Coutinho obviously for aforestated marketing factor if he stays, but if he still wants to go next summer no chance.

The captain is there to talk to the ref so I think someone that is calm but competitive and has some intelligence should be captain.

                            Totally agree with you.

But who is a leader in the positions in which we are lacking the quality needed ?

If it was just about leading by example then Bobby would be my choice. But it’s more than just that I feel
