Maldini and baresi for me were sublime

    Comment

I have seen highlights and the odd worldcup game (and a few football Italias on C4), but you are obviously seeing them at their best, or playing against ****e most of the time.

Maldini and Baresi were probably the best centreback pairing ever. VVD probably being closest to Maldini out of the three. Baresi taking most of the credit cause he could play pretty.

Same with Beckenbauer. Although he was pretty fantastic on the ball, didnt really see him have to defend in the air a lot.

      Old football was rubbish though...

In the beginning, Fowler created the Heaven and the Earth.

Maldini played most of his games as a fullback no? Costacurta was Baresi's cb partner in that impregnable Milan/Italy defence I believe.

I think Nesta was as good as any of them and I loved hard ******* South American centre backs - Montero, Samuel and to a lesser extent Ayala. From the PL I think Japp Stam, Sol Campbell and Paul McGrath were brilliant - if McGrath was taller then he could be compared to VVD

A certain Mr Hierro should be in the conversation.

              World class midfielder.

              World class sweeper.

              World class Centre back.

And he picked fights with trains.

Bobby Moore - one of the first defenders who didn't just stop and hoof, he played the ball out. Him and Beckenbauer were world class.

No mentions for Harry Maquire or Phil Jones then?

                    Puyol was also pretty good!

                      Paul McGrath was seriously underestimated!

He was a big influence for me when I started playing football.

He was a big Hierro of mine.

I met Hierro in a hotel in Madrid. Shook his hand but he admitted not to knowing who I was

He was probably just a bit star struck

                                Good shout on Paul McGrath.

Ask an ex-colleague who the best player they played with, and a lot of them will say him. He was amazing. Imagine what he'd have been like if he wasnt ******ed most of the time.

I attended the first tour of lfcs axa stadium and they had john Aldridge there as a guest speaker. He was asked who was the best player he'd played with was and he rattled off a load of amazing names...... Barnes, Rush, Beardsley, Brady, Hansen..........and then said Paul McGrath was hands down the best teammate or opponent he'd faced.
