Yeah, we did have a custom question for quite a while, and while often more effective than capatcha actually it doesn't work quite as well as you'd think - to begin with it stops them all but eventually the question seems to get picked up by bot authors and added to some db and they start passing it in droves.

For an age we had manual validation turned on, so even after registering I had to check every account and allow it before it could post, but that sometimes led to delays and seemed to be putting off legit new regs. So Paul turned that off a while back and instead tried a modification that blocks known spam regs, which works quite well but clearly isn't foolproof.

I'll have another look at the current registration process over the weekend and see if we need a new unique question or something.
