Where is this fantasy of playing Arnold in midfield coming from? I would be surprised if he ever does play there.

It’s hardly a fantasy, he played at lot in midfield in the youth teams and is where the boy wants to play (Gerrard was his idol growing up).

There is also something of a parralel with Gerrard who broke into the side as a right back.

Very few full backs (if any) start off as full backs, generally they started off in other positions. It's a big transition from FB to CM and Trent could well do that, but it's a big leap for a lot of people who have never actually seen him play CM (not necessarily you) to assume he'll develop into a quality CM just because Gerrard played a few games at RB when he broke through.

Aye. Traditionally, before the modern full back became a specialised role, players were often started as full backs to earn experience before being moved into their natural role.

When I coach I'd usually put a new player on as a right or left full back to see what they're capable of in a game first.

WRT to TAA he has natural attributes for a full back but like Gerrard he's also probably too good for RB. Gerrard was ridiculous though, let's not get ahead of ourselves, he could have played 4-5 positions to world class level, and did.

For me he just seems to have all the attributes of a centre mid. He's looking a decent full back but looks to have more to his game going forward than he can show from fullback. I think he could have a good career at full back but I think he has more to offer. I think he looks like a player with the potential to influence a game and would be more involved in the game in central midfield, the fact that he has played there at youth level obviously helps. Now obviously I'm just a fan so what do I know? maybe he will play there eventually, maybe he won't. If it is in the manager or coaching staff's minds for him to play there long term, a situation like this might be a time to trial it.

It came from Pep Lijnders playing him there, didn't it?
Also, he has played right wing for the 1st team already, so you could say he already has.

Seen it suggested quite a few times that the club see him in a CM role in the long term.
