Liverpool playing at home just after Grand National is 'madness', says mayor

City mayor Joe 'Fats' Anderson has called the decision to stage a Liverpool home match just minutes after the Grand National start at Aintree "madness."

The Premier League match against Bournemouth at Anfield has been chosen for live TV coverage and will kick off at 17:30 BST on 14 April.

That is 15 minutes after the start of the race, four miles away at Aintree.

It is the first time for 24 years the Reds have been at home on the same day as the Grand National.

In April 1994 Liverpool kicked off at 11:30 against Ipswich in front of a crowd of just 30,485 and the race followed at 15:50.

Moving the match to the following day this year was not an option as 15 April is the 29th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster and Liverpool have not played on that date since the tragedy.

Mayor Anderson added: "The costs of the overtime for police will fall on the taxpayer and can the transport network cope? Seems a ridiculous decision to suit TV again."

It is understood that no Premier League match can take place without the agreement of a club's safety advisory group, which includes representatives from local statutory bodies.

Liverpool v Bournemouth is also considered a low-risk match from a policing perspective.

Seven races are held at Aintree on Grand National Day, with the first due off at 13:45 and the last at 18:15.

A crowd of around 70,000 is likely at the racecourse with a further 53,000 expected at Anfield.

It was announced on Wednesday the match would move from 15:00 to 17:30 and be live on BT Sport.

An Aintree spokesman said: "As with each year, we're working closely with the police and transport providers but we don't anticipate it affecting racegoers travelling to Aintree for Grand National Day.

"People will be heading to Aintree hours before the football crowd goes to Anfield and leaving Aintree well before the football finishes, but as with every raceday, we will do everything possible to ensure the best customer experience for our racegoers when at Aintree Racecourse.

"Grand National Day is already close to sell-out but of course it's a shame for anyone who wanted to attend both events."

Another fixture change on 14 April sees Manchester City travel to Wembley to play Tottenham in a match that kicks off at 19:45 GMT.

It had originally been scheduled for 15:00 GMT and could be the day when Pep Guardiola's team win the Premier League title.

The thing is last race aintree is 6.30pm.... by the time it all finishes and people finish drinking they will still be letting out at the same time the footy lets out about 7.15pm

What ****ing moron thought this was a good idea? Some out of touch exec in London for Sky no doubt.

All we need now is for Mersey travel or Arriva to call strikes on that day and everyone is ****ed.

they usually time some sort of strike to have maximum effect...

the traffic chaos will be biblical, the city centre that night will be mental for all the wrong reasons.

              Am I missing something here?

If we can't play on the 15th, what do people think is the most appropriate kick off time on the day of the GN?
              Oh I don't know.

We takes Sky's money we do their bidding.

This has been going on for 20 odd years and it'll never change as long as they continue to pump billions in the pockets of the league and the owners.

i reckon the council will ask the police to step in and press the big red button.

Thing is though, the police would have had to agree to this as well. So from a safety perspective, they must think it is okay. I actually think that getting to and from the ground will be okay. Worse case scenario, you walk back into town. Big deal.

But I have been to the GN and town that night is always mental (great in a way, full of clunge). Adding a load of football fans to that as well isn't a great idea. And if there is a high profile assault (or god forbid, even worse) then the likes of Joe Anderson et al will quite rightly come out and say "I told you so".

Friday night would also be a bad idea i think. Basically, there will be a load of people in Liverpool already for the GN event / meet and town will be rammers. For me, at this stage, Monday night makes most sense.

Got to think though, why not just make sure both Everton and LFC are away that weekend at the start of the season??

Champions League in the preceding week so that precludes Friday, but the Monday could work I suppose.

But BT don't have the rights to MNF, so that doesn't work.
                        Oh I don't know.

                          agree with all of this.
cant have LFC and the cuckoo clock club both at home but can have 60k at the GN and 50k at Anfield.

town is full of very drunk people who have been on it since early afternoon, just cos they have got their party frocks and **** shiny suits on doesnt mean they will be behaving any better than normal once the fruity cider, voddy, prosecco and beak kick in.

We played Stoke on the Sunday after the GN in 2016, so I imagine it will be similar numbers on the Saturday night as it was then.

I would argue there was no trouble back then, but I was probably in bed drunk by 10pm so I wouldn't know.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?
