A solid take on the game and where it leaves us by (in my opinion) our best player on the night.

Thursday’s 2-1 reverse to Manchester City ended the table-topping Reds’ unbeaten sequence in the Premier League this term at 20 matches and cut their advantage over Pep Guardiola’s team to four points.

Goals in each half by Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane - which sandwiched Roberto Firmino’s Robertson-assisted leveller - proved decisive at Etihad Stadium, with the visitors seeing Sadio Mane hit the post prior to Aguero’s opener.

City defender John Stones cleared off the goalline immediately after Mane’s attempt and again to deny Georginio Wijnaldum as Liverpool pressed hard for a late equaliser in the second half.

Losing to a direct rival is, of course, always a blow, but Robertson insists the Reds’ mentality in the title race will remain the same.

“It doesn't change anything, it’s just the same [as] if we had won,” the left-back stated.

“It would have been nice to be 10 points clear of them and nine points above Tottenham but we wouldn't have won it [the title].

“We have not lost it [and] they're obviously delighted [seeing] their reaction at the end, but they've not won it either.

“We will fight right to the death - they've closed the gap but it is all about how we react. It is a new experience for all of us. We can use that to our advantage and we'll look forward to the games ahead now.”

On how the game unfolded, Robertson continued: “I saw the picture of the one were Sadio hit the post and then the deflection - it was millimetres, but they're the fine margins.

“If that goes in it might have been a completely different game. But they then scored before half-time and we needed to bounce back, which we did.

“I thought we were controlling the game at that point but we just left ourselves that wee bit too open and a team like City punish you.

“Credit goes to them but we are still four points clear at that is what we have got to remember.”

That loss last night and the circumstances around it can happen to the best of teams. Even Barca at their best would not always win away at the Bernabeu due to the sheer nature of the game.

Man City gave it everything while I think we were caught a bit cold but still stood up well. It reminded me of the CL nights we had at Anfield where we would beat a side just on pure determination but we all knew that it was the crowd and atmosphere carrying us and the other team was better over the season.

I think we are better than City. I really believe that. I don't think our players needed to run 14km each. It's asking for an early burnout. Will be interesting to see how Man City continue but I would be surprised if they don't feel the effects of that (especially Fernandinho, Aguero, Silva).

Still along way to go and with Gomez/Matip to come back in, Keita still to be unleashed, Fabinho getting to grips with his role... things are looking good. Heck we might even have a cameo from the Ox

Robbo Good to see their world cup, CL, league, super bowl quadruple winning celebrations at the end didn't go unnoticed either.

If we were going to lose away at the champions is the place to do it . This single game will have no impact on where the title goes. Yes it gets them closer but we are still in the lead and it's in our own hands.

If we repeat the performances from the first half of the season in the second part no one will catch us.

given how we’ve had the rub of the green so far, the Mahrez penalty miss, Everton , our luck ran out a bit last night. We wasn’t battered and still have a 4 point lead.

Don't get me wrong, it's definitely worked well in the past (PSG and Napoli home) but if you look back at some of the big away games, we've failed to get a control of midfield and it's cost us. Think back to Roma away, Real Madrid, Napoli away (I know Keita started but he came off early in the first half), PSG away, these are all games where we've have gone with the so called tried and tested trio. For me it just doesn't work particularly away from home against the the big teams. What we needed yesterday was composure on the ball and someone who could carry the ball. It was all too erratic for me and our midfield struggled with City's press. When Fabinho came on you could see the difference in composure when he had the ball. Our attacks were instantly better imo. He definitely has to start more often for me and Keita really needs to push on. He would give us something that's been missing since Ox got injured.

the idea of 433 with those lads in midfield baffled me all week

we should have gave them our best, although I imagine there would be moans of we should have done 433 if we lost

We needed to drop Salah in deeper to get involved in the game first, and didn't manage it.

We/they managed to make the focus of the first half our midfield and not the forwards.

It was not our best, not much in but that's barely any consolation

The moves for Mane hitting the post and also for the goal were amazing. Also didn't Stones clear another of the line late on?

We were really close last night.

It was telling Liverpool still went for the win when it got back to 1-1. Perhaps should've (in hindsight ) sat back but shows the ambition.

The angle his body receives the ball at he can only ever go backwards or sideways. He's very limited. His energy and effort cannot be questioned. He did his best. He just has not got enough class or ability these days to control the game.

He was our best midfielder because Milner played like a 50 year old and Wijnaldum forgot how to play football altogether for a change.

Things will get better when Fab and Shaq are back.

Yeah he can't take the ball on the half turn and as I've said before, I think we're outgrowing him now we're becoming a part of the absolute elite. He'd be a great squad member imo and does a job against most teams in the league. But for me it's time he was phased out as a regular.
