For all of his ups and down, this is great news. One less issue for us to solve in the summer, and a bit more continuity

On balance, I think it would be better if he stayed. We're already losing at least 2 senior players from the squad so need to keep some experience. Helps to have a fairly settled back 4 for the new season too so that we can hopefully ease Leoni and Jacquet in slowly.Statistics are like bikinis. He was brilliant last year and the year before. He has had a poor enough season but apart from Dom, nobody.else can hold their head that high this year. And what this season has taught us all is that too many changes in one transfer window can **** you up.
I think with changes in the central midfield in front of them, (definitely tactically and maybe change of personnel too) and hopefully the emergence of Leoni and Jacquet as well, and this is all good. It is likely that next season is virgils last at lfc (although you never know!!) so to change too many players again would have been silly imo.

He’s hitting his premium years and will be 27 next month.
One poor season during which his dad and a teammate have died is allowed. Allied to that the team is so disfunctional in general, as mentioned nearly everyone has been poor.
Fingers crossed he signs as he would be hard to replace if he leaves.Modifying post.

This gives us a nice balance in defence next season with two senior CB’s and two young CB’s.
Hopefully Konate can step up and be a bit of a leader for the two young players on and off the pitch so VVD can get a bit of a rest every now and then.
It could also push Konate as he will have two top young players challenging him for his spot.

TBH I reckon we need to be bringing in a senior level CB regardless of what Konate does with his will he won't he contract signing.
VVD will be down to his final season and another year older so would like to have someone in getting ready to be the replacement whilst we still have VVD here to do the business and show the new guy the ropes.
Is also going to be the final season for Gomez, so we don't bring in a new guy now, then we go into the summer of 2027 with a VVD shaped hole to fill and a Gomez back up slot to fill.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

You could add in that Leoni is coming back from a big injury and you don’t want to rush him back and Jacquet had his shoulder injury so we don’t know how ready he will be to start the season. Explains the links to van Hecke and Senesi. One is free the other wouldn’t be too expensive as his contract has one year left.
3 senior CB’s with VVD likely off after next season and and two young guys to build up during their first seasons, it’s pretty much a first season for Leoni after his injury.
And going off what Doc said about getting in the VVD replacement now and learn from him for a year maybe they’ve learnt from the Salah drop off and are willing to have an extra CB next season.Last edited by peterbread; 20-04-26, 04:17 PM.

With Spurs likely getting relegated at the end of the season, they're going to be looking to offload players. We've been linked with Van de Ven this season, so that's a possibilityStatistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital. Aaron Levenstein

If he turns out to be the height of our ambition for a CB signing, we really will be scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Guy is constantly having hamstring issues and knee issues. Yeah he can run very fast when fit but we already have a share of fast injury prone players.
This season is an anomoly for him in that he has not missed many games compared to pretty much every other season of his career to dateI don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Forgot he was the one that did that to Isak.
Good point about his last ditch "tackle" as it is, as you said, something that would get him booked/sent off for us as he does it a lot after getting caught out of position.
Strikes me as a defender who has more than a bit of Kyle Walker about him in that he relies on his pace to cover for average positioning/reading of the game.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

I haven't seen a huge amount of him/Spurs this season, but when I have I wouldn't have said he ever stood out as a player we should sign, also his injury record is something we could do without.
I would like to see us sign whoever we see as a long term VVD replacement this summer, but I suspect that we only do so if the right 'market opportunity' (or whatever the club call it is) my feeling is that they will feel that they have 3 transfer windows (this summer, January and next summer) to sort something out, they might feel that we have brought in two promising option and with opportunities next season we might hope one of them 'take off' and we don't have to go big for a VVD replacement as we already have one, if that doesn't happen they probably fee there is still time.
I think Konate is going to be key next season as you have to assume he will be the mainstay of the CB pairing with VVD having his minutes managed somewhat (perhaps not initially, but certainly as the season progresses) and we will be hoping to bring in Leoni or Jacquet who more or less become Konate's main partner by the end of the season. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

If he signs then think that is what Konate will be seen as. But how often have we looked at him as being a natural successor to VVD?
As in if VVD was out or gone, how many would look at Knate and say he is the guy to lead/organise the back line and the guy that other guys learn froim playing alongside and who have their own game elevated tghrough playing alongside?
Not sure I have ever see that in Konate or thought that about him.
Have seen him look amazing for Liverpool and put in great performances that had me thinking he is a very good player, top class performances, but have never seen him as potentially being "The Guy" at the back. Kind have always seen him as a player who is part of the back line, potentially a very important part, than the guy the back line is built upon.
And whilst another VVD is simply not out there, I do think someone like Bastoni or Schlotterbeck could be that bedrock type player upon which the rest of the backline is built upon/around and from whom the rest of the backline take their cues from be it through verbal organising or through leading by example.I don't hate people. Yeah he's just not that guy. He's a physical specimen, great one vs one that has put in some great performances beside and under the direction of one of the goats. On the other hand, he's rash, awkward on the ball and not the smartest footballer and has looked an absolute catastrophe on many occasions too... a worrying amount if I'm honest. Even with Virgil on the backend, he's still an inspiration and a young CB can learn so much from him. I don't really see the likes of Leoni or Jacquet learning much from Konate. Jacquet is an unknown, Leoni is an unknown, Konate is hit and miss, Gomez is hit and miss and a crock and VVDs best days are behind him. I would feel much better if we signed a solid and seasoned CB in the summer and got rid of Gomez and Konate.Last edited by danperkins; 21-04-26, 07:58 PM.
