Liverpool Lime Street station, 7.20pm Sunday. About an hour has passed since the final whistle at Anfield and, if the day had conformed to expectations in even the slightest way, these would be tense moments.
There are trains leaving for Manchester Piccadilly at 7.25pm and 7.29pm, for London Euston at 7.43pm and various other destinations, across the north west of England and beyond. Typically on a day like this, the station would be full of the two sets of fans — testosterone pumping, tribal instincts raised by whatever has just happened on the pitch — and the police officers on the concourse would be braced for trouble, ready to step in to stop any tensions escalating into something serious.
But on this occasion, there is no danger of that. Because everybody is still too stunned by what they have just witnessed a couple of miles away at Anfield.
Liverpool’s 7-0 victory is not only the biggest in the 129-year history of this fixture, it equals Manchester United’s heaviest defeats in their entire history, which dates back even further, to 1878. It is utterly extraordinary and the atmosphere inside Lime Street reflects a sense of disbelief.
A group of Liverpool supporters, seemingly in their 20s and heading home to the Midlands, meet up outside Starbucks, all of them wide-eyed in disbelief: “Oh my god, oh my god. How good was that?”. “Can you believe that?"
For United, it was a different story. On-loan striker Wout Weghorst got the day off to an inauspicious start, from a United point of view, by touching the 'This is Anfield' sign in the tunnel. Weghorst, a boyhood Liverpool supporter, was later seen having his photograph taken next to the six replica European Cups in the trophy room used for the Anfield stadium tours. It remains unclear whether or not Weghorst went on to book himself a slot on the tour. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
