I don’t see any way a ref can watch the replay, see the flick of the leg towards the ball and conclude it was a deceleration off the defender. It’s not possible for a sane and competent human being to draw that conclusion. It was personal, a deliberate act of revenge. He was appointed to send a message and he took that too far. The foul on Gakpo and resulting scars is just as perplexing. It’s not at all similar to the Jota incident v. Spurs either (which is being banded about). It’s 100% a red, to the point that if that’s not a red then what is???
Having the Spurs 4th official on VAR yesterday is also a ridiculous decision, it puts too much pressure on the individual.
