Was the first time that I think I have looked at VVD play and really seen a lot of flaws in his game.

The whinging and moaning was not good to see either. Showed how uncomfortable he was in his individual duels. Even before balls were played in for set pieces he was moaning at the ref. Seemed to be letting everything get in his head.

He was not terrible but he "only" looked decent rather than the best defender in his team and he was the defender Ireland targetted most often and that we got the most joy out of.

Think VVD was lucky we had Idah starting last night and that Ferguson was not available to start. Idah gave him a 50/50 battle for 90 minutes, Ferguson could have done that but added more pace and finishing ability.
He's a spent force. He's lost his invincibility and now players can get at him. Our best bet is an incoming Saudi bid to get off the wage bill.

I blame pickford for bringing forward the time he would have had at the very top.

Idah is a willing runner and a fairly robust attacker and he seemed to give VVD all he could handle despite Idah not being the best in terms of technique.

Were it not for VVD being a bit quicker than Idah, I think he would have been in a lot more bother last night.

Think if PL managers watched him last night, then a lot might be thinking of ways to target him.

Aso think VVD is lucky when he comes up against the likes of Haaland that Haaland does not have the workrate of someone like Idah as that makes Haaland a bit easier to play against when it comes to physical battles.

Think last night was my tipping point with VVD in terms of thinking he needs to start being phased out ( as in not being a nailed on starter) from the end of this season.
I'm hoping he learns to accept his limitations and gets back to basics and maybe we get a few more good years out of him. At the end of the day, he's still dominant in the air and excellent with the ball at his feet, he just seems to struggled with the fact he's no longer as fast and still plays as if he's still 26 in his head.

That assault by Pickford definitely the turning point, like Bob said.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

          I think that is hyperbole.

He is still very good. I doubt there will be many players available who are better. Perhaps if we get mega money for Salah, we will split it.

As for going to Saudi... Perhaps he will see the stick our last captain got for going there, and think its not worth it.

We will need to replace Matip next year too. It seems like its the defense's turn.

Think my issue with him of late is that the physical side of the game is something he is often not happy with and seems to want/expect to be given time on the ball or to receive the ball rather than having to compete for it.

He also seems a lot easier to wind up/ruffle the past 12 months or so.

He is sort of reminding me of when Rio Ferdinand lost a tiny bit of pace and agility towards the end of his career and could not always adapt to not having that extra second of time his physical abilities and reading of the game used to give him.

Still a very good player imo and hope it does not sound as if I am saying otherwise, but not that genuine world class in nearly every game player he once was.

As a supporter of LFC it was just not great to watch a game and see him as one of the weaker links (him and Simons imo) for the team he was playing for.

Flekken caught my eye a lot last night too. Not sure if he always plays like that in goal, but if he does I hope when we play Brentford that we put in a lot of crosses because he did not want to catch many balls last night and tried to punch/flap at almost every ball into the box.

He kept backing off players last season. The defence is creaky as **** and that's despite having the best keeper. No time for passengers.

Would have thought that you would have developed a bit of empathy for your fellow aging crocks by now

That said, how are things coming along with you now?

                  Haha. True.

Much better thanks. The movement has come on lots in the last few weeks. Probably at 90% which is excellent, but I'm impatient to get back full mobility. I think there will always be a dull pain when I walk, so cushioned insoles will be my trustee companion over the coming years, others have a dog mine will be scholl. The biggest thing I have to regain is my energy levels, I feel drained after a day at work. Physically and mentally. I'll keep plugging away until I can do no more.

Elliot played the full 90 for England U21’s in the 3-0 win this morning. Thought Jones would be in that squad but he’s not.

He's no longer eligable for the under 21s as its now into a new 'season' (he turned 22 in Jan)
