    Arsenal and Monaco play each other tonight so one of those will be out of the running. Barcelona and Dortmund also play a win for one of them means the other would need better GD to catch us

            The maximum number of points each team can get doesn't tell the whole story. For example, in order for Atletico to get more points (or GD) than us they would have to beat Leverkuson. Which means that Leverkuson then can't overtake us.

            From an eyeball check, there are 14 teams including us, as of now, that can finish top 8 mathematically by knocking us out. But with the fixtures as they are, only 12 can actually manage that logically. If the results go our way tonight that will whittle down even further, potentially to 8 teams which means we can lose the last two without a worry.

            Edit: ironically tonight we don't want Barca v Dortmund to be a draw as it keeps both teams on target to overtake us. A win either way is preferable. Conversely, we would like an Arsenal v Monaco draw that would rule both teams out. If these results happen, we immediately eliminate 3 of the 12 teams leaving only 9 teams that can finish top 8 while knocking us out.

              There are 13 teams that could according to that go through at our expense, by tonight that will be a max of 12 (one of Arsenal or Monaco won't be able to catch us after tonight, a draw means neither could), but 4 other teams play tonight and have to win to be able to move above us (Lille, Benfica Atletico, and AC Milan). If all those results go our way we could be through tonight.

              One other thing to look out for: a draw in the Barcelona-Dortmund match would mean another win would seal top spot for us.

                You don't need to worry, we're not getting beat by lille and PSV. The latter is likely to be a dead rubber.

                  A much clearer assessment. Thanks. Didn't realise about guaranteeing top spot. Could be a poisoned chalice finishing top for the next round (Real, Atletico, City lurking in the deep).

                    Not for PSV though as they will want the max value of funds for a win as every little bit counts in that tin pot Dutch league.

                                After this mornings matches you can add 3 points for Atletico, Lille, AC Milan, Arsenal, Barcelona, Feyenord, Juventus & Stuttgart then 1 each for Benfica & Bologna.
