Being comfortable on the ball isn't enough though; it also requires receiving it with the awareness of what's around you, being able to turn etc. CB are used to having the play in front of them 95% of the time. Any of the 3 will be limited in the role to breaking play up, so maybe Sami's positional sense will be more useful than Agger's passing - but Carra is the better bet for me

I actually read it in an interview from a magazine, 442 a few years back. Now whether he was solely a central midfielder I cannot say but the games the scout were at, he was being played in midfield. Could have been due to squad injuries. Either way, its true. He was playiing in midfield for Willem II when Liverpool were watching him.

Carheex, Dan is right. Hyppia was definitely playing in central midfield when our scouts watched him.

With Hyppia being one of the worst passers of the ball in our squad the thought of him playing in central midfield scares the living sh!t out of me.

eh? He doesn't like being rushed into a pass being a CB he likes to deliberate over his options for a bit, but some of his long passing is excellent

I love Hyppia. He's a brilliant defender but he is not a ball playing central defender. He cannot pass for sh!t in my opinion. If you disagree, fair enough.

To a degree I agree with you. The problem as with several of our players is in his choice of ball and his relatively poor short passing and the hesitancy that these weaknesses tend to bring. If I remember correctly he had the highest percentage of successful long passes in the PL last season which shows he can pass well in some situations, I'm unconvinced he has waht it takes to play the holding midfield role.

Thing is it's only one game, we don't exactly need to call on him again to do this role after this (hopefully).

I still think Rafa is going to surprise us somehow tonight.

I still think Carragher will play in midfield tonight.
