Thanjk you.

Im not sure about Alonso and the world class tag to be honest.
I actually thought he was better than he is, he has dissapointed me this season so far, his defending is average for a player who sits infront of the back 4, is passing is obviously class though. I think he is more suited to La Liga or Italian football than the Premiership. I still wouldnt like us to get rid though as I love his range of passing. If momo was better on the ball, he would make an awesome partnership with Xabi.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'
"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

Would I sell Alonso for 20 mill £? Absolutely! We would miss his 3 goals and 7 assists but I'm pretty sure we can find adequate cover for 20 mill. Sorry Shags - he's overrated.

Sorry CAD, but that's rubbish.
A few months of poor form and everyone thinks he's crap. Come on.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
A related but different question. It seems that our three main CMs are not well balanced hence we have to shove Stevie G out wide and put up w/the fact that Momo is not your typical attacking midfider. Xabi is great at the playmaker role but is not your Makele type holding player.
As I said the balance is all wrong. Imagine you had the chance to replace one of the above with someone under 24. Who would you sacrafice? Who would you bring in and where would they play and in what formation?
To me the above is the biggest conundrum we face at the moment.
After I've read some of your reposones I'll let you know what I think.
If a bid came in for Alonso of say £20m, and 3 quarters of the cash was then used to sign Tim Cahill, would you be happy with that?
As for the origional question, both men would play different roles, Rafa would need a excellent long and short passer of the ball to replace Alonso, not an advanced midfield type player to replace him.

I think that you are looking at it wrong. In Spain many teams play with two deep lying midfield players forming a shield in front of a back four. Ideally this allows all 5 players in fron of them the ability to attack with far less emphasis on defending. It can also be used to free the fullbacks.
This season the whole back 4 + 2 holding midfielders plan has been a bit undone by the crap form of all 6 f these players and also of Reina earlier in the season. At the end of last season we had seemiingly come to grips with how it should work.
I think the problems we face with fitting Gerrard into this system have changed this season. He seems determined to work on becoming more central. When played on the right he has drifted in and failed to be as dynamic as last season, however he has been much more disciplined when used as one of the two deep lying midfielders. I think he might genuinely be turning himself into an ideal player for us in that role, however he has done it atthe expense of the team.
To play the system well we need to get two wide players who are good with the ball at their feet and also are willing to get into the box. The only player we have who fits the description is Garcia. I'm a big fan of his but he is not the sort of player to drag us out of bad form on his own.
Unlike many others I feel that Pennant has all the qualities necissary to do a job for us. However he hasn't performed so far, for whatever reasons. However I think that Arsenal id the right place to look for players to model our attacking targets on. Particularly in the past Ljungberg and Pires were ideal for this role and Hleb and Rosicky have shown at certain times that they will adapt to do the job well.
I also think that one of the central two players of the attacking four has to come deeper and be creative. I think that Kuyt has shown the ability to do this, as at times has Crouch, but if we have noone breaking into the box it is too easy to defend against them as a pair. Maybe Bellamy is a better option than one of them as he offers pace, however he hasn't found any sort of form so far this season.

He's not the right partner for Gerrard and offers too little on the last 1/3. Always has...
He's often the only reason the ball actually gets into the final 1/3 though. It's not worth debating, at the end of the day I think with Alonso you are either his biggest fan or biggest sceptic.

Yet he was our highest assisting player in the League last season with 7. No offence but you're talking out of your arse as usual.
His job isnt even solely to create and score goals anyway, he's a deep lying midfielder who can keep it simple, play it long, break up play and yet he was still our top assist man last season as well as our best midfielder tackler and passer. What does that tell you? The lad is class and we shouldnt sell our best players.
If it was up to you though our team to play Wigan on Saturday would be
Gerrard
And thats it.
Its also no surprise our ball retention has become a lot worse since he's been injured not that it was great anyway but its a lot worse without him.
