Reserves Report - Liverpool Reserves 1-1 Blackburn Rovers

    GUTHRIE EARNS REDS A DRAW

Steve Hunter at Christie Park 11 December 2006

A brilliant goal from Danny Guthrie was the highlight of Liverpool Reserves 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers at Morecambe's windswept Christie Park on Monday night.

The Reds midfielder combined superbly with Nabil El Zhar before volleying home the Moroccan's cross with his left foot for the equaliser just before half-time. It was a deserved goal for Guthrie who had an excellent match in central midfield and it was the perfect one-two with El-Zhar for the goal.

El Zhar was unlucky not to win the game for Liverpool eight minutes from time when he produced a couple of step-overs to deceive the Blackburn defences but then saw his curled effort superbly saved by Frank Fielding. Then Robbie Threlfall curled a free-kick just wide.

This was the reserves first league match since their 2-0 win at Wigan on November 1st and Reds boss Gary Ablett fielded a young side captained by Guthrie while Craig Lindfield led the Reds attack alongside El Zhar. Miki Roque, who made his first team debut as a substitute in Galatasaray partnered Godwin Antwi at centre back.

The Reds suffered a bad start to the game when they found themselves 1-0 down inside the opening three minutes. A curled free-kick from the right side saw Steven Thompson and Godwin Antwi challenge for the ball and the final touch appeared to be from the Liverpool defender that sent the ball looping over the head David Martin and into the back of the net.

Liverpool came close to an equaliser after six minutes. A fantastic turn and pass from El Zhar set Adam Hammill away down the right and his low cross was just missed at the back post by Lindfield who couldn't quite stretch his leg long enough to reach the ball..

Blackburn almost made it 2-0 after 36 minutes when hesitation from Martin let in Joe Garner who was unlucky to see his effort hit the roof of the net.

Guthrie then equalised for Liverpool two minutes before half-time. The strong wind didn't help matters for both teams but Liverpool were much better in the second half and with a little more luck might have won the game.

Blackburn Rovers Reserves: Fielding, Bateson, Olsson, Stopforth (O'Keefe 11), Winnard, Thomson, Judge, Hodge (O'Connor 85), Dadson, Garner, Woods.

Guthrie continues to do well, his taste of the first team probably did him a world of good. On a side note, that Ray Putterill fella is scoring alot for the u18´s - is he any good?
