That it's from the Mirror makes me take it a tad more seriously, they always seem to be in the know more than most when it comes to us. Never heard of the kid though.

never heard of him.rafa's youth purchases have been poor to be honest. None have really seemed to have looked even remotley possible of making the breaktrhough.

Liverpool.no mentions him, but only because it`s in the papers. He`s a attacker. The Chate... teamsite doesn`t have in the A-squad as far as I could figure out.

Thats a bit harsh - he has mostly bought defenders and they rarely break through until they are at least 19-20 and many of his youth signings have been 16-17. Also worth noting that Sissoko, Agger and Palleta were all under 20 when we signed them so his signings of young players has been pretty good. We made money on Barragan and I think someone said he has been playing in Spain, so he must of been pretty useful.

The only real dissapointment for me has been the lack of progress of Anderson.

Palletta has hardly impressed and looked decidely poor against Gala. Momo and Agger were bought for too big a fee to be just stuck in the ressies so I wouldnt count them. The youth signings are the 16/18 yr olds he's signed and none seem to be much cop.
I just cant see any of them at the moment shifting our current first teamers, even someone like Pennant!

Our youth system in general has not produced much since the days of Carra, Gerrard, Owen, Thompson, mellor and Warnock. even then Thommo was shifted on (for reason only know to the club and player) and Warnock isn't exactly first name on the sheet. even ones we have imported in, like le Tallac Pongo, Antwi, Barragan etc have hardly left much of an impression.

I'm not sure we have had time to tell wether Rafas youth buys have been good or not. I would expect most players bought in in the 16-18 bracket for small fees to be players who need work and so you would expect them to take 2 years or so to come though. I don't see any of the myriad of signings made by Chelsea since Mourinho and then Arnesson went there breaking into their team yet either, at a young age players are always a gamble. It takes a long time to bed in a system - the only fully functioning one in this country is Arsenals and they have had a stable structure for many years and it only started providing players after 3 or 4 years of Wengers leadership. We could do with a team in Belgium like United and Arsenal to act as a finishing school as I fear that one of the reasons youth development is so hard to do in this country is that the reserve leagues are so uncompetitive and the lower leagues are all physicality over technique.

In terms of the youth system in general Peltier and Guthrie look like they will become at least as useful squad players as Warnock and Mellor ever have been. I think though the general failure has been noted and the rumours of Heighway being removed seem very likely.

I knida rate Linfield anyway as a striker, would like to see a local striker getting through the youth setup.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.
