Toughest LFC Player Ever?

I've been watching Liverpool since 1977 and, in my opinion, over the last 29 years or so, the hardest player we've had has been Graeme Souness.

I'm too young to have seen him when he was playing at the time, but any clips and stories I've heard are frightening.



A hard player, and also ****ing ruthless.

Momo, Gerrard and Carragher are bloody wimps compared with Tommy Smith. Not only was he a fantastic player at RB or CB - he'd walk into the current team as he was vastly superior to Finnan, Carragher or Hyypia - he was has hard as nails. I saw his entire career and if you saw him play you'd realise that the aforementioned players weren't in the same "hardness" league. He'd have eaten Souness for his breakfast too. But he wasn't just a hard man clogger, he had an exquisite touch and was quite simply one of the best players to pull on the red shirt. In any best XI of the last 40 years he would be in it without a shadow of a doubt. Any other oldies will agree.

I couldn't agree more. All three would run through brick walls for LFC and not worry till the final whistle. Unfortunatley I don't remember Gerry Byrne properly.

I remember watching us play Villa when Steve McMahon (no softie) was still there. Souness tackled him so hard ( no foul btw) he went flying up in the air.
5 mins later Souness was on the deck having been tackled by McM difference was McM got sent off!

I have an image of Souness laughing like a drain as he stood up but I might be "dream remembering" that!

Smith, Souness, Case - in that order. Most of what they did on the pitch would probably carry a prison sentence now.

Jimmy Case was tough but Souness for me. He had so much swagger and authority to go with the toughness and just bossed games.

I remember when a young Gerrard tackled him during an England Germany match.
The comment Gerrard made was "he squealed like a girl"

Agreed that people should not underestimate Smith's ability - he could take a Goalies punt on his instep and kill it dead. Also a master of psychology (ask Leighton James - if he evr comes within a mile of Anfield). Anyone remember him dummying Joe Jordan when he was at ManU? Not with the ball, SMith was waiting for a header and Jordan set off to take him out. Smith was looking up like he couldn't see him, but juist stepped out of the way as Jordan got there - Jordan ended in the crowd with his moimentum. Class.

Case was hard, Byrne too. Souness was an assassin, and could mix it too. But none match Louie Bimpson. (Ask your Grandad)
