Rafa And Wenger Unhappy With Postponement

    From the Liverpoolfc.tv

Rafael Benitez and Arsene Wenger have both declared themselves unhappy with referee Martin Atkinson's decision to call off Tuesday's Carling Cup tie at Anfield.
Atkinson felt the fog surrounding the stadium was strong enough to make playing conditions impossible and so postponed the match one hour before kick off.

Benitez admits the decision could cause future fixture problems for Liverpool and feels the match could have gone ahead as planned.

"In the opinions of myself and Arsene, it was possible to play this game," said Benitez.

"We must respect the referee's decision but we don't agree with it. In these conditions we could have played. The referee said to us that he had difficulty seeing both corners of the pitch and that it could be difficult for his assistants.

"A lot of people were looking forward to this game and it's really difficult to explain why it was called off.

"We have a problem now because if we draw against Arsenal in the FA Cup then when are we going to play this game? The replay for the FA Cup game will be when we could have played tonight's match. Maybe we can play for both Cups in the same game!"

Arsenal boss Wenger added: "I'm disappointed because we wanted to play and so did Liverpool.

"Unfortunately we weren't able to influence the decision of the referee, even though we tried."

Wonder if they'll still play the Kids?

Of course they're unhappy, they don't want the fixture congestion. I wouldn't have expected anything different from either manager.

As for a winner takes all one off game, unfortunately that means less advertising, less revenue for the clubs in gate receipts, less TV coverage etc etc. Nice thought but never going to happen.

They wont be unhappy, its just easier to shift blame.

Yeah, gotta agree with that; having been out in aforementioned fog I can safely say it would have been a huge mistake to attempt to play in that. As an example; I looked across a very well lit car park (Asda Walton, very close to the ground) at 8pm & couldnt see past one row of cars.

Actually at 8pm the inside of the ground was easily playable, looking at sky sports, it looked fairly obvious that the ref made the wrong call.

Not the same as being there fella.

A couple of examples for you:

                    1) Wimbledon tennis : it always looks bright and visibility always looks good but that is the magic of TV. If they showed a pitch black court it wouldn't be very interesting.
                    2) Cricket. If you've watched it live you'd know that a lot of the time the light is very poor and the players are in danger hence a stoppage in play.If you're watching on TV it looks like bright sunshine.

I left the ground at half seven and you still culdnt see **** all. No sooner would it begin to lift it would come down again. You really could look, then look away, then look back and see the difference.

Even if the players could see perfectly, what about the fans?

Mike Riley went up to the back of the Kop atleast twice. You couldnt see **** all from up there.

Rafa was only joking about that, by the way....

I would have started the game, and if conditions got too bad, then call it off. IT seemed the fans had done the travelling already. Feel sorry for thoose who came from abroad for the match.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.
