At the time he was struggling a bit but his form between 07-09 was still fresh in the memory and I still regarded him as the best no.9 in the world.
But he never really fitted in. He thrives on a direct, fast, vertical game (not long ball, big difference)...which is what he got with us, with Stevie providing through balls etc.
Spain's slower, horizontal tika-taka never suited him but they had to include him as he was the best striker in the world. But I was fascinated talking to loads of Spanish folk none of whom wanted him in the team because he simply didn't fit.
So if they were of that opinion when he was the best no.9 around, he's got no chance now.
Poor bugger.
