Torres for me isnt close to even someone like Alonso

Alonso actually won something whilst he was here AND left on good terms

All Torres has done is berate the club since leaving

I find it pretty difficult to envisage a man like Bob building a club up like Shanks did though - so Bill just edges it for me. Paisley took Shankly's work and made us the best in Europe but Shanks was the key IMO.

All horses for horses though. Two tremendous men.

Torres is not and never will be a legend for three reasons -

              1. We never won any silverware while he was here.

              2. The manner in which he left and the comments he has made since then.

              3. He was a never a team player. The lad was always purely out for himself from day one. The fact that he wanted to leave at the end of the terrible 09/10 season only a year after we came second is evidence of this. When the going got tough Nando got going.

Going back to the thread title then, the criteria to be classed as legendary should be tough so that its not lessened in any way. Any list should be limited to only a dozen and should start with Shanks, Paisley, Dalglish, Gerrard and the others are a matter of opinion.

I don't there is a criteria, it just comes down to how fondly they are remembered by the fans. Fans remember players and managers for what they do while there at the club, what they achieve and how they talk about the club once they have left.

For me Dalglish and Rush where always my hero's... true legends that have always had a fondness for the club and talk about the club with great affection.

Behind them John Barnes and Fowler for me, both are just Liverpool through and through.

When Barnes used to pick up the ball on the left wing ( or upfront ) and start running at players there was no one more exciting to watch, he used to single handedly tear teams apart, killer final ball as well, just a genius with the ball at his feet. To mention Torres in the same breath as him is an absolute insult to the man!

Fowler, because he was just one of the most spectacular and clinical finishes I've ever seen and used to wind-up opposition players and fans alike - I think he still does as well!

If a player is remembered with any bitterness or leaves and has bad things to say about the club they will never be remembered as a legend. Torres would make a list of great players but he wouldn't even make my top 100 in Legend status.
"If you can't support us when we lose or draw, don't support us when we win." - Bill Shankly

Knew the list would get battered, was late and just threw some people together that flew into my mind.

Think I put Torres' in out of personal favoritism tbh personal preference will always come into it, and I loved Barnes, but I didn't think he was in the same 'legend' league as Gerrard.

I know what I meant, I think I may have put it across in the wrong way.

I would day its the single player who stood out in their generation.

So it would be Dalglish, Barnes, Fowler and Gerrard... and whomever before Dalglish, (as I would not be qualified to answer).

I guess Rush would have to go in as our leading scorer. The likes of Sami, Carra, Hansen and Souness you could debate as being awesome in their own right, and perhaps worthy. But for me the list starts with those 4 players.
In the beginning, Fowler created the Heaven and the Earth.

For me, someone like Titi Camara is certainly up there because of what he did in that one season for us when the rest of the strike force were out injured. The goal at Highbury was memorable, but the one against West Ham remains one of the most striking images in my time as a Liverpool fan, not because of the goal itself, but because of his reaction (breaking down in tears in front of the Anfield Road end) and the subsequent revelation that his father had died the night before, and that Titi insisted in playing because he was our only fit striker. Modern players could learn much about loyalty, decency and dignity from that man.
I'm ashamed to admit I'd forgotten about that. I wouldn't necessarily call him a legend though. To put him in the same category as the likes of Gerrard and Dalglish just feels wrong to me.

Still, that's an incredible story. I think it's a subjective thing isn't it. There's probably only about 10-15 people who would be on everyones legend lists.
