It damaged the club a lot when he left but it also helped a lot of fans seeing how bad state the club was in when the Xabi money disappeared. No one laughed at the ones pointing out how bad Gillett and Hicks ran the club after that.

Rafa refused to sell him 2008 even that we got a lot of offers. He even said that he would walk if we sold him in 2008.

I believe myself that if it wasn't for Rafa then we would have sold him for around £15m 2008. The owners would probably been very happy to cash in.

Rafa isn't blameless but as I see it the ones to blame is Gillett and Hicks and not Rafa or Xabi.

Anyway, Xabi is part of our history now. Let's not get into who's fault or why he left us

People say all sorts of things.
            .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

No ones fault imo, Madrid came in for him, and Xabi wanted to play for them.

Even though Xabi has on more than one occasion stated that he left as the club tried to sell him the season before he left.

Um... I've always been a fervent Rafa supporter but didn't he immediately spunk the income from Xabi on Aquellani?

                    I might be wrong..

Top pro, top bloke, top player. Rafa's biggest mistake.

Spot on. And £17m was spent on Glen Johnson (although the money owed from the Peter Crouch transfer was written off). Arbeloa stated he would have stayed had we not signed Johnson. Point is, the money from the sale was spent on players and not servicing the interest payments. The Champions League would easily have covered the amount owed.

Roma owned us money(Riise deal). We didn't pay any money to Roma before 2010.

We used the same tactics when we signed Kyrgiakos. AEK owned us some money after the Nemeth deal.

We used the Xabi money to pay the interest.

We also used the Keane money to pay the interest.

Around £45m that should have been used to strenghten the team

Some revisionism going on here on both sides. Yes those parasites H&G screwed us over financially and a lot of the transfer deals we did around the time were obviously effected by them. However a year before Xabi left we certainly tried to sell him and buy Gareth Barry with the money. That was based on choice, not necessity.

Fwiw, great though he was, I wouldn't want him back now at this point of his career.
I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue

What tale shall serve me here among
                            Mine angry and defrauded young?

it would be lovely to bring back our past legendary players, but i have to agree that it might be a little too rose tinted to bring alonso back.
he looks like he can still do it, but this is in a decent madrid side, against some spanish wimps.

we need beef. fresh beef. not old horse flesh.
removing all the weak links makes us stronger

too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.
