I just think our transfer dealings have been very poor over the last 5 or 6 years and we appear to be getting worse at it

Yes true but the players we bought played at the highest level. Who did those three play for before?

We've not been great but I also think it comes down to there not being massive quality being available. We seemingly are overpaying for players that are probably tier 2 in terms of quality and hoping that they might step up.

Not having CL football and seemingly unwilling (quite rightly) to max teams such as City and Chelsea in the wage stakes will always put us a bit on the back foot.

Whatever happens in terms of transfers going forwards we've got to hope that there is clear plan of the areas that need strengthening first and foremost followed by the type of players that have the right traits to do the job for us, the squad itself isn't bad it is however missing some key positions being filled by the right type of players.

The whole Brendan Rogers tenure is somewhat sadly ironic. He started his time at LFC by stating that the £35m Andy Carroll was not the type of player to fit into his team. He needed someone up top with movement and pace. He was so adamant on this point that he left AC leave on loan without signing a replacement and we went into the first half of BRs first season with Suarez and Borini as our strikers. Andy Carroll was eventually sold for £17m - and we were happy to get that at the time because Stevie Wonder could see that he was a poor professional that would struggle to ever complete a full season injury free.

Fast forward 3 years and Brendan presided over the signing of £32.5m Benteke - who is essentially an Andy Carroll in Emile Heskey clothing.

Brendan was sadly a fruad and when he changed his tiki-taka approach then he should have got the bullet. It is dissappointing because we genuinely played the best football most of us can remember when we nearly won the title. But the whole club have lost the plot since then and have really wasted **** loads of cash since then.....

ITs sad but think how the club would of been had we never signed Suarez. Rodgers strikers so far would be Borini, Lambert, Balotelli, Origi, Benteke, and Ings.

Rodgers was a con man. No wonder he's keeping a low profile.

We've been awful in the transfer market. If we're signing players for £20m plus then I really believe they should be excelling at their current club not just playing very well. By excel, I mean runnin' tings. Whether it's in defence, midfield, keeper or attack, they need to be the major stand out player at the club.

So basically we've gone and signed many a good, functional players (at a strecth) but no-one great.

It's been a waste of money. No doubt about it.

Leicester and Watford have much lower expectations and smaller squads so there's more time to integrate them into a pattern of play and there's less pressure on them to succeed.

That said, I'd have all three in the team right now.
Also as soon as we show an interest the price goes up ten fold. However you need to be shrewd in the market, and we are not. Our policy of buying statistically good prem proven players since FSG took over (throw in Carroll and Downing) has been an unmitigated disaster.

I'd say you need to find players with ability (obviously) that can do a job in the team you are building (big failing from BR - though **** knows what his playing style was) but who also have the mentality to survive and prosper at a big club. This last point is something we used to do well (Alonso, Torres, Kuyt, Mascherano etc) but we have recently lost our way with.

Rafa used to buy captains didn't he? These leaders are the players we lack currently and if you look at successful teams throughout history they were full of leaders.

Didn't Lallana pull the strings at Southampton?

Klopp on LFC vs MUFC (March 9th 2016) - "This is why I love football. This is why we watched it when we were young. I can still not have enough of it."

If we didn't have Suarez when he came in 2013-14 wouldn't have happened and he would have been sacked sooner
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I should really add that they need to do it consistently over 2-3 seasons so the unknown quantity goes out of the window too

So many of our players have been bought at a high price on the back of one good season. We seem to get suckered into paying top price for a player who has just had the season / half season / month /game of his life and as soon as we sign him he reverts to form.

Out of the list I still think Firmino and Markovic will become valuable to us under Klopp. Seems to have a lot of what it takes in them. Lallana is a maybe, can't really figure right now. Sakho is very good and will be a stable and Lovren looks decent squad player.

Only really outs for me right now are Allen and Balotelli that I can't see offering anything meaningfull and Benteke is very much on the way out, but may fight back if he manages to change his style - which is doubtfull tbh.

But generally I think we have to accept that players cost 15m+ now and in most cases 20m+ for a good established player.
I agree that player valuations are now ridiculous. Then maybe another way to look at it is will we get more than what we paid for if all of those players are put on the market now. I think the answer is no to all of them.

Just been thinking about Benteke and his signing for us it seems like he is over awed by being at Liverpool like he is happy to just be involved at times.

Maybe he does not have that arrogance that the best players have which is knowing you should be starting all the time and telling people what to do on the pitch and that seems to go for most of our signings,

None of them have come in and looked like they belong here. It is like we our a team without any captains at times and the armband can be given to anyone as none have the required leadership in the first place.
