The game is far more intense than it was and the players are athletes but some of those beer swilling men of yore had tremendous physical qualities ie Ian Rush would close down all day back then and Terry McDermott was renowned as being one of the fittest players the club has seen (despite drinking shed loads of booze)

Fitness and conditioning is easier to give to someone than pure ability

This is a great side currently, its genuinely one of the best I have seen at Anfield

      Just enjoy it

Jurgen Klopp declared Liverpool “have a proper history” after refusing to set a plastic points total for his all-conquering team.

The Premier League champions elect increased their lead at the top of the table to 19 points with a 2-0 victory over West Ham on Wednesday night with Mohamed Salah and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on target.

A the same time nearest rivals Man City were working their way to the Carabao Cup final and after the games both managers appeared to have a pop at each other.

Pep Guardiola was keen to point out he had played a strong side all the way through the League Cup and claimed: “You don’t try to diss the humble competition of the season.”

That appeared to be aimed at Klopp, who put out a team full of youngsters against Villa in the Carabao Cup earlier this season, before playing a weakened side against Shrewsbury in the FA Cup.

Whether or not Guardiola’s comments had registered with Klopp last night before he spoke is unclear, but the German appeared to have a go back at Guardiola and Man City.

Asked if he set Liverpool any targets, like Guardiola did with the 100-point record and in 2018 when he set them a target of winning 10 of their last 14 games, Klopp said after Wednesday’s game: “Not sure if I have to. I was never in that situation, to be honest. I didn’t do it so far.

“Last year we had 97 points, I’m not sure if we could have had 100.

“Ninety-eight would have been possible, if we’d got a point maybe at City, so no, I didn’t do it. ‘In the moment when I see I have a problem motivating the boys then I will have to use different things, but so far it’s not necessary.

We are Liverpool and we have a proper history and everybody knows what we have to do. So the motivation is to reach that and not any points record.

“If that will happen as a side effect, we will take it, but we are not only concerned about that.”

Asked whether he takes any extra satisfaction from beating all 19 Premier League teams, Klopp added: “Nothing like that. I don’t feel anything like that. It’s not about feeling satisfaction or whatever. I really don’t.

“I was in the game completely, wanted to win it, my boys wanted to win it desperately.

“No-one thought before the game: ;We’ve won against 18 different teams in the league so let’s make it 19.'”

“A season is like you have to dug in, and you don’t breathe pretty much, or you jump in the water and you don’t breathe and then you come out after 38 games and then you have a look at what happened.

“So that’s how we really see it. So nothing like that in the dressing room. I don’t want to be extremely – what’s the right word – boring, but it’s just it doesn’t feel like that.”

He has absolutely the right attitude about records

Win the trophy first and if you break records in achieving that goal then so be it

Personally I would rather win the Champions League as well as the Premier League than smash records, however there is a chance we can do all three of these things

That's only what he's saying to the media, 100% he's after all the records too

I heard that in the press conference and had a chuckle. It was subtle, but brutal at the same time.
