Klopp is the £25m man for Liverpool

Jürgen Klopp has become the highest- paid manager in Liverpool’s history after signing a three-year contract that will earn him up to £7 million a season in the most significant statement of intent yet from the club’s owner.
On a dramatic day at Anfield, confirmation of Klopp’s appointment as manager was pre-empted by a shake-up of Liverpool’s backroom staff in which four senior figures were removed from their positions.
Just four days after announcing their decision to terminate the contract of Brendan Rodgers in the wake of a 1-1 draw with Everton, Liverpool flew Klopp to Merseyside from Dortmund by private jet. The 48-year-old brought their brief search for a successor to an end by signing a lucrative deal that makes him one of the best-paid managers in the Barclays Premier League.
Although Klopp’s contract ends in June 2018, Liverpool have the option of adding a year to the deal, meaning that the former Mainz coach could earn in excess of £25 million over the agreement. José Mourinho, Arsène Wenger and Louis van Gaal are the only Premier League managers who will earn more on an annual basis.
By convincing Klopp to take up the challenge of reviving Liverpool’s fortunes, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) believes it has underlined its ambitions one week short of the fifth anniversary of its takeover.
His arrival also marks a departure from the owner’s previous preferred blueprint of having a young, up-and-coming manager at the helm. Key to FSG’s decision was a belief that Klopp, who won two Bundesliga titles as coach of Borussia Dortmund, can galvanise the squad, which it feels had been underperforming before the departure of Rodgers.
The group also hopes that the German’s reputation will prove a draw to transfer targets. Liverpool have struggled to attract elite players in recent seasons.
Klopp will be presented as manager at an Anfield press conference today, when he will speak publicly for the first time about accepting the challenge of revitalising Liverpool as they look to emerge from one of the least productive periods in the club’s history. They have won one leading trophy, the Carling Cup, since 2006.
The sense of excitement generated by Klopp’s arrival is already tangible. Last night, supporters congregated outside the city centre hotel where he was staying, and fans are expected to congregate at Anfield to welcome him today.
The make-up of Klopp’s backroom team was agreed this week and the arrival of Zeljko Buvac and Peter Krawietz, his former colleagues at Dortmund, signalled the end of Sean O’Driscoll’s brief time as Liverpool assistant manager and Gary McAllister’s role as first-team coach. The latter has accepted a role alongside Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler as a club ambassador.
Glen Driscoll, the head of performance, and Chris Davies, head of opposition analysis, are also leaving.
