But when a person writes a letter and dates it, they do tend to find out the correct date, it's quite an exact thing to do imo, habit, especially if you write lots of formal letters, he probably has a big executive calendar in his office i'd wager.

However, saying all that, your inference about Ayre still stands as a strong argument as to why it's wrong.
