I think Klopp made the right choice leaving Phil on, I think out of him and Firmino he was the more likely of the two to produce something magic.
I think his main mistake was not bringing Allen on straight after we conceded the second goal, sure we needed a goal but we needed to get some players into midfield, bringing Origi on sort of gave us two isolated figures instead of one.
Lallana was the best out of the three behind Sturridge tonight, getting some pelters but probably tried the hardest in the entire team after Kolo, I've got time for that.
Thought Milner grafted but struggled, he's better out wide, and Can benefits from having Allen next to him.
I hate to be a bit of a damp squib but I hope our transfers over the course of the summer are of a bit of a more marquee standard than what we have seen so far, we've made some smart buys but now have two more backup CM's when we need a first team one, and a centre back that according to people who watch him more than me is more a replacement for Skrtel than first team star.
New keeper, new left back, both ideally would be proven and no unknowns.

Which is certainly an achievement in itself.
However, you have to question the impact of not being able to offer European football to potential new players this summer. Especially no Champions League which is what a number of top class players see as their minimum. We have to hope that a number of players can buy-in to Klopp's vision and he holds enough pull on his name alone.
Yesterday was the opportunity to jump ahead of schedule in our development but I can see next year being another one of transition.Comment

We were out foxed tactically in the second half, and Jurgen didn't have the answers for once. We've rode our luck to an extent in the Europa and last night was perhaps a game too far.
We had it though, and if we could have kept it tight for 10 mins after half time it might have been interesting. I am sure Jurgen has learnt a lot about the mentality of the players in the squad and it is going to be interesting to see who comes in, but also who stays and who goes.Modifying post.Comment

Fine margins isn't it.
Benitez managed to deliver an amazing, miraculous win in Istanbul with an inherited squad containing the likes of Traore, Biscan and Josemi. Klopp was 45 mins away from doing similar with a similarly mediocre bunch, inherited from Brendan.
Just wasn't to be last night. Doesn't mean it won't happen under Klopp though...Comment

Hindsight and all but we were over run in midfield from the start of the second half and his changes didn't help us or come early enough to help us. 4 attackers and only two in midfield killed us but then once you concede you have the difficult choice of leaving the attackers on to try get in front again or take some off and shore it up.
He's done great this season and even the league would look miles better if it wasn't for the capitulations in 3 games while 2 nil up. He has his work cut out in the summer but no doubt we'll be regulars at the business end of tournaments under Klopp.
His record in finals is worrying though.Comment

Klopp has tried to instill a high energy pressing game playing 3 games a week with technical players inherited from Rodgers who aren't suited to that style.
Next season, by the time he has added 3 or 4 more mobile, athletic, powerful players and we're only playing once a week he'll get us top 4 minimum.The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.Comment

It's an interesting point.
Do we think Klopp's motivational methods and preparation may have them mentally shattered before kick off? I'm sure I read somewhere of Gerrard being too fired up for a game and the negative energy caused him to become exhausted. Then for the 2006 FA Cup Final - as a more experienced pro - he was more relaxed and lasted longer.

He simply set the team up incorrectly and left to far too long to change it. 4-2-4 is madness - when Rodgers used it in the nearly season the games were often chaotic - fine if you win not if you lose. They were running about like mad things and couldn't react with any calm cohesion when the tide turned.Comment

I think it could have worked with someone like Lucas alongside Can, Milner isn't what we need centrally, neither are Allen or Henderson TBH. In fact with the benefit of hindsight, maybe something lie, Can - Allen/Lucas in midfield and Firmino - Lallana - Milner behind Sturridge.
I know we can't drop Coutinho, but this would make up for Sturridge's lack of pressing.* The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.Comment
