I wasn't being entirely serious about that, but a lot of footballers have struggled to adjust to the food. Not least our own Mo Salah who said as much in an interview recently.

Not sure what money has got to do with it.

Poor people generally have to eat the food they can afford, whereas rich people can pay to shop in luxury food stores, have food imported, and even hire personal chefs and dieticians.

It is strange, and money is relevant. I can't think of any type of food that I can't get my hands on within an hour, either delivered to my door or with a drive into town. I'm sure there's something but even exotoc ingredients are now easy to come by. And this is in a northern city akin to Liverpool. Living in Liverpool does not mean having to eat battered sausage or Scouse, especially with enough money to employ a chef.

Do people really believe he left because of the food? that's the funniest thing I've heard all day. He left because he wanted to play for Barca, his family may have added to the pressure but he has said had it been any other club he would have stayed which puts the family, food, weather argument to bed as far as I'm concerned

The climate, the culture, Suarez telling him how happy his family are in Barcelona. You can't really blame him.

The only sour point is the smoke and dagger game he played in leaving. That was a **** way to end things. We've had players pulls similar ****house tactics to move to us though so we're hypocrites if we complain.

For South American and Iberian players, playing for Real Madrid and Barcelona is a dream. It is also the easiest route for them to win trophies. Once they move to these clubs, they are pretty much guaranteed some medals if they stay for 3 years. In the Messi/Ronaldo era this has only worsened, as the gap between these two and the rest in the La Liga has worsened.

If family was such a big concern, do you really think Mascherano, Coutinho, Suarez would have agitated for a move if Rayo Vallecano, Getafe (based in Madrid) or Espanyol (based in Barcelona I believe) showed interest?

Precisely my point, family excuse is a nice PR point. I don't deny that Coutinho's wife prefers Barcelona to Liverpool and I can understand that. But putting that as a main reason is trying to bull**** your way out of the club. Coutinho went to Barcelona because it was the easiest way for him to get medals. Same reason why other players agitate at Southampton to join us.

I hate agreeing with Roy Keane but at one point he made a statement which I am paraphrasing. On footballer's wages you can live comfortably on any place on the planet. In most cases, even if you hate the location where your club is located, you will only have to stay there 3-8 years. You can then have enough money to live anywhere you want for the rest of your career. He was talking about location being a big factor in footballer's decisions.

I disagree in as far as the clubs these guys move to are at the elite end of the spectrum. Getafe aren't in that league, they're not in the market for that level of player, they're not in the equation.

If they were to get sugar daddy rich, then that opens up a new level of player for them.

It's about being in the market, innit. These guys aren't gonna take 80% or whatever pay cut are they?
