I think if you compare starting 11's you'd be looking at
2008-09: Reina, Arbeloa, Carragher, Agger, Aurelio, Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard, Kuyt, Riera, Torres

2018-19: Alisson, TAA, VVD, Matip, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Salah, Mane, Firmino

I think if you were playing fantasy football you might be tempted to take the 2008-09 midfield of Mascherano, Alonso and Gerrard over the current midfield because they great players and are bigger names, but I don't know if they would work in the current system, and it would be a very different dynamic. Personally I would go with Fabinho ahead of Mascherano as he's IMO a more complete player also with the tightening of the rules Mascherano's discipline could be an issue. You'd probably take Torres but for me that would be it 3 or at most 4 of that 2008-09 side would make it into a joint side in my opinion.

I'd ask Virgil if he'd play on the right, and if he gave his permission I'd have Agger as his partner. Agger would have the speed and athleticism to cover the distances required when playing in a system with a high-line and such attack-minded fullbacks, as Matip has, but he's better on the ball. However it would be a slight aerial downgrade.

I know this isn't important, and ranking them like this is stupid, but Klopp has gone above Rafa for me now. I used to be prepared to fight to the death for Rafa and argued with a lot of his critics (on here and irl) til I was blue in the face. I cried when he left, and loved him very much. But Jurgen, man. Jurgen. Jurgen is an incredibly special manager and an incredible special bloke.

Once he wins us the league and you know he is going to, he goes just below Shankly and Uncle Bob in our managers pantheon. The 97 points is as great an achievement as any of our managers have accomplished.

Liverpool have reportedly entered the race to sign Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt.
German newspaper Bild claim the in-demand defender could be Jurgen Klopp’s ‘next triumph’ after lifting the Champions League title.

Barcelona are still considered favourites to sign the 19-year-old, with Manchester United also strongly linked with an interest.

But, according to the reports, Liverpool are ready to launch a serious bid to unite the Netherlands star with his international team-mate Virgil van Dijk.

Jurgen Klopp has also responded to the transfer speculation surrounding Mohamed Salah.

There is a frenzy in Spain with reports linking the Egyptian star with a move to Real Madrid, after a rumoured row with his manager.
Is has been claimed Salah is ready to hand in a transfer request having ended the season on a high by winning the club’s sixth Champions League title.

But Klopp has no fears over Salah, or any of his key stars, leaving Anfield.

He told German newspaper BILD: “I think the players know what an extraordinary club they're playing for, so I'm not worried about that.”

Jurgen Klopp has insisted he is not interested in the Bayern Munich job, after Franz Beckenbauer said he wanted him to take charge of the German champions.

The Germany legend and Bayern’s honorary president said he would “wish for nothing more” than for the Liverpool boss to manage his club.

However, much-loved Klopp has responded by reassuring the Reds and supporters he can no plans to leave Anfield.

Klopp told German newspaper BILD: “I like Franz — and he likes me. But I have a long-term contract at Liverpool.
“I would rather he said that than him saying and thinking that I cannot (be Bayern manager).
“However, both Bayern and Borussia Dortmund have very good coaches. And what could be in five years or more, I do not know.

“Maybe there will be completely different coaches that qualify.”

Why would any of our players want to leave for Madrid? IMO they are more of a spent force than Barcelona, I imagine both would spend big, but surely after the weekend you want to stay and be part of something special here, same goes for Klopp he has just written himself into Anfield folklaw bring home no 19 and he'll be up there with Shankly and Paisley

Yeah, we'll have him til 2022. He's said quite a few times he doesn't want to go deep into management.

I think he'll leave as planned in '22 and he'll take on another seven year project in '23 and retire.

Everyone can change their mind of course. Would be marvellous if we could get a caretaker in for 22 and him to come back for a final 7 year swan song. In the meantime i'll enjoy him while he's here.

If he does decide to leave in 2022, then really, we've only got 2019-20 (next season), and 2020-21, because we'll then be looking at a succession plan before, and during his final season in 2021-22.

I can't tell if the article is saying he'll take a year off, we install someone Pep Ljinders for a year, and then Klopp comes back for another stretch - or he takes a year off the game, leaves the club, and comes back to the game with someone else.
