Sell some players then. I get that Klopp has been (possibly) unfairly constrained by the money available, but he is not blameless for letting the first team age and drop off as it has. You have to sell someone with quality and may have to settle for someone of slightly less quality, you make sure you cash in on players while they still have value etc. You do it every year. It might result in a downward trajectory, although if done well/if lucky maybe you improve. It’s not as if we’ve had zero money to spend so it shouldn’t mean a drop off like ours.

Could be that extending a contract is a lot cheaper than replacing the player. Milner has no transfer value. Hendo was showing his arse to clubs in France when he had 2 years left and wanted a bigger deal. Ox would have got very little, look at Lingaard and he doesn't get injured every week. Jones has ha enough chances but here's the thing.

They are all English and if you're replacing English players with English, that's even more expensive.

Good point there really, thinking about homegrown quotas

That's exactly it, it costs £7.5m a year to offer an existing player £150k a week and you don't have a transfer fee to pay. Assume a new player would be on £100k that's £5m a year the difference is what you have to put towards transfer fee, signing on fee and agent fees which is £2.5m a year. Not offering a 4 year extension gives you about £10m to work with for those fees that gets you nothing these days

Who are our 8 HG players? Gomez, TAA, Henderson, Milner, Elliott, Jones, Ox and Phillips??

Assuming Milner, Ox and Phillips leave next summer we need 3HG players to take their places either by signing them or bringing them through the youth setup, or we accept we can't have the full 25 man squad.

You receive a transfer fee for the player.

You also get new player who hopefully isn’t on a downward trajectory like the one you sell.

You avoid increasing the wage/cost of a player who’s worth less to you than before, and making it even harder to move them on as they decline further.

Henderson should have been sold. Bobby could have been sold for actual money now his contact is up in the summer. Same for Keita. And Ox wouldn’t have sold for much, but we’d have got something and got £6m+ off the wage bill with zero impact on the pitch.

I think this could still be salvaged if we brought in two capable midfielders in January. A quick, tall and combative six is imperative then another solid midfielder who can chip in with goals.

Just having a strong base would allow the fullbacks to start going forward again without the fear of being countered.

If Ox signed a new contract, the remaining value would be written off over the life of the new contract, so technically I dont think it can hit zero unless he signed a new contract after the initial one expired.

This means (for example) when Salah signed a the orginal contract for 5 years, costing 35m (7m a year), when he resigned in year 5 he only had 7m left, spread over 3 years (so 2 and a bit million). This gave us 5m extra a year which we could spank on his wages at no extra cost
It would yes. Sorry I meant in terms of the amortisation of the transfer fee - it would now be written off in full as he's in the final year. It's the transfer fee that's capitalised and amortised - the wages are a financial commitment. I think we're essentially agreeing anyhow

If we are talking about players such as Henderson, Milner etc that fee would be minimal given age, even for the likes of Keita, Ox with their injury records you don't get close to what it would cost to replace them even if you add £10m that you saved in wages.

Klopp won't put up with this from FSG forever....he's won everything at this club...He'll walk as opposed to working on pennies to buy players and challenge the oil rich clubs.
Klopp stays FSG can fcuk off..The club is now at it's most valuable price...

Not saying it is, the point was we are renewing contracts of older players because it is the cheaper option than buying a new player.

What is effectively happening is that we are gambling that Henderson/Milner/whoever will offer enough that we can bring in first choice players that we want in other positions and avoid bringing in a CM. Otherwise we say instead of spending £40m on Diaz we have something like £55-60m to improve that position and CM.

Put up with what exactly? Not sure what you're on about. Why would you sign a new contract committing yourself to 2026 if you hate FSG so much? Your logic falls down a little there.

Do you think FSG made Klopp keep Keita, Ox, Milner etc. How much was Darwin again? Diaz?

So why is Klopp moaning about other richer clubs then?

Klopp says what we're all thinking in a press conference --------> Klopp hates FSG and will quit

Is that your thought process? Or are there a few other illogical steps in between
