To be honest so was Suarez (by rival fans), until right up to the season we sold him.Originally posted by Shaggy View PostHe's underrated full stop. It's bizarre.
I think our best players often are under-rated.
Coutinho is one of the very best players in the world and if anything I think he's only going to get better.

Was the same with Xabi Alonso. Soon as he ****ed off he became world class
I remember SSN running a poll in about 2007 - best centre mid in the PL. 10 options, featuring Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes, Gilberto Silva etc. Alonso wasn't even in the 10
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

I get it from other fans as they don't watch as much as we do and are also looking for fault (see Kane/Lukaku etc on here). I just can't comprehend how some of our own fans done see it, until they sign for another club.
Xabi had plenty of critics too and probably would have had a lot more if certain fans were not forced to take his side in the Rafa fallout. If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

The fact that a lot of our better players over the last 15 years or so weren't from fashionable countries for the Sky Sports brigade definitely had something to do with it. Especially with their hate for Rafa who signed many of them. I can't believe how many great players have left Liverpool, I still think of Mascherano as recently a Liverpool player - it's impossible to believe that this is his 8th season at Barca and he's made more than double the appearances for them as he did for us.
When we signed Charlie Adam, I remember someone on SSN saying that he was 'better than Alonso and it was a miracle we could sign him at that price'
There were actually quite a few people around the club making comments like that - it actually made me furious at the time.
Off topic, but on Rafa - it's funny that he's getting more UK media praise now, making Newcastle half decent and not playing horrific football (like Pulis) than he ever got doing a good job at top clubs in the Premiership or abroad.

he was ****ing class mascherano - as was Xabi - man what a midfield we had with those two and gerrard plus Momo giving it a bit of depth.
We've been so close to putting together a hell of a side in recent years - if only they all came together at the same time and we'd have smashed the league - just imagine - (I think this is right) but from he last ten years - if all these had come together at the same time and peaked

I think the thing is that these players have gone on to fulfill there potential and win multiple trophies elsewhere having won nothing with us. The sad reality is that we haven't been all that successful over the last 20 years. If the players mentioned had won some titles with us then I'm sure they would have qualified as world class whilst playing for us. Unfortunately that's rarely been the case. We have been the stepping stone for some really remarkable players.Modifying post.

Aurelio was definitely the best left fullback we've had in recent times. It's a pity he was always injured. One of our best technicians. I was watching that 4-1 Man Utd win the other day, he looked after Ronaldo perfectly the whole game, then dispatched that freekick. His delivery from wide areas was always class. If he had more pace he'd probably have been the best in the world in his position, although he wasn't far off of it when he first signed for Valencia. Unreal player when fit.
