Stoke City winger Xherdan Shaqiri has completed his move to Liverpool for £13.75m after a successful medical at the club. The Swiss winger was knocked out of the World Cup this year at the round of 16 stage after a disappointing defeat to Sweden but now looks set to light up Anfield next season.
Shaqiri was one of the few shining lights for a Stoke team relegated to the Championship and the former Bayern Munich man was a wanted man this summer. Spurs, Huddersfield and Southampton were just three of the teams loosely linked with a move for the 26-year-old but Liverpool have batted them all away and got their man.
This transfer looks set to start off a chain of transfers between Premier League and Championship clubs. Matt Ritchie could sign for Stoke as a direct replacement for Shaqiri, having already won two promotions from the Championship with Bournemouth and Newcastle. That would leave the Magpies looking for a replacement and Andros Townsend fits that bill.
If they do bag Townsend then it is reported that Crystal Palace would like West Ham forward Michail Antonio as his replacement, given the big signings that the Hammers have made already this summer. Felipe Anderson is set to join their ranks over the weekend which could push Antonio out of favour.
But Liverpool have bagged their man and he should be announced in the next 24 hours. With Liverpool’s exceptional front three, he won’t be expected to start, but he could make a big impact off the bench.
Shaqiri will wear the number 23 shirt at Liverpool.
