To this day the only Scottish club whose results I looks out for is Motherwell, and that is because of tales I was told as a kid of how good Ian St John was for them.

An excellent Player, tough as old boots and a leader, he was a big part of the foundation of our great club.

To often some of our fans use the term legend when talking about our players,but not when they talk about the saint he is a true legend.

I used to walk past a church quite close to the ground that had a poster saying "Jesus saves"...someone had added "but St John scored from the rebound".

Last time I saw the Saint in the flesh he was on the muddy ground, swapping punches with some third or fourth division thug player down at Prenton Park. I prefer to remember better times.

I was too young to recall him as a Liverpool player, but he is part of that indelible link between Scotland and Liverpool.

Mainly, I think for anyone of a certain vintage ‘Saint and Greavsie’ was an absolute cornerstone of their footballing education. Before I knew much about teams and who people played for I knew the game from their show. Greavsie, off on one, Saint laughing and trying to reign him in.

He played a big part in connecting people with the game. Making it fun and recognisable.
