Not so sure about that. If it was Lennox Lewis or Evander Holyfield they would have a field day as well. Just like they would with any big name star basically.

Anything to do with Tyson being in trouble gets the full media spotlight, I don't think that Lennox nor Evander would get the same mainstream coverage that Tyson gets.

I mean if Oscar De La Hoya was done tonight for drink driving, would we see it get the same coverage as Tyson, and even if it did, I wonder how many people would go "who?" when they heard his name.

Yeah, you're right. I never thought of it that way. I was looking at it from a boxing fans perspective. Tyson brings it all on himself though doesn't he?!

I had a terrible habit of always looking at things from a boxing fan's pov as well, I always assumed that because I heard of the fighter that other sports fans should have as well. The lack of knowledge that the general public has towards boxing, even at the highest level is shocking, but understandable given how diluted the game has become.

I was reading a book about James Braddock last night, and the contrast to what being the heavyweight champion of the World meant to the general public from the 1920's through to the early 70's is staggering compared to nowadys. Back then the Heavyweight champ was the man, and all other sports came second.

Tyson defo does bring it on himself though.

Tyson is just a tool. Add to that the fact that his public image isn't to the taste of everybody, he's been pilloried by the press each time something cocks up with him.

Was a great boxer in his days though. For sheer brute force and aggression, he was the best boxer ever IMHO.

A bold statement indeed. There have been some fighters down through the years that had brute force that belayed their size and agression to match. I am guesing you mean at Heavyweight. One fighter that also struck me (through old show reels I'll admit) as having frightening power in relation to his size as a heavyweight, was Max Baer. Both hands were deadly and he had agression to burn in an era when hard men were just that.

A guy at work had a tattoo of Mike Tyson done on the outside of his lower arm. I called him in the office and said "Lower arm tattoos have to be covered in accordance with company dress policy, so I've asked *** to order you some long sleeved shirts... Funny, I just had the same conversation with a mate of mine last Friday - I asked him if we took a poll of everyone from the bar we were in, how many of them would be able to name the current heavyweight champion(s) of the world.

I said that hardly anyone would be able to name the heavyweight champ, whereas when I was a kid in the 70's my grandmother could have told you who it was.
