I think he actually achieved perfection against Roddick. Best there has ever been. Roodick has been on top form recently and Federer just destroyed him.

I'm unlucky enough to have seen only clips from the Roddick destruction, but as I said in the Aus Open thread, he's the greatest sportsman on the planet today. He plays incessant jaw-dropping shots and he's a ****in joy to watch. Complete and utter control, perpetual motion, elegance and an absolute master of his trade.

I'm inclined to agree but I think he suffers from a lack of competition. Sampras had good competition when he was around, mainly from Agassi.
Federer doesn't really have any rivals so it's hard to take his achievements as seriously as Sampras's

I think we're on the brink of seeing lots of competition for Federer. I'm no tennis expert but from what I've seen there are loads and loads of players with massive potential - and some of it is being realised. That Fernando Gonzalez fella from Chile is fantastic, really explosive. There's obviously Nadal, Richard Gasquet, Murray, Davydenko, Baghdatis, Robredo...I'm sure one or more of them will become top class.

The thing is, Federer is so close to tennis perfection that you can't see anyone getting close to him. Someone else needs to attain perfection to just challenge him. It's unfair to mark him down for blowing everybody away. You could argue Nadal would be world no.1 in eras gone by.

Federer is the greatest tennis player ever. Sampras had a booming serve and his game was based around that to an extent. Federer has everything.
