Really, I remember being at a fashion show/shoot for "Off The Rails" and I would nearly swear that it was at the CIE club in Inchicore. It was for athlethic clothing and there were some boxers wearing the clothes. Think Gary Dargan was involved.

just googled that, havnt been there in years mate, seen the website for it.
I doubt very much they would have done it in the old place the way it was, infact, I know they wouldn't have. Must have been done up, I'll drop by next time i'm down that way and have a look.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

Yep it was there. Just checked the "Off The Rails" website. It was Gary Dargan who was the boxer involved.

Looking at the pics, it may not have changed that much after all, just maybe done the place inside up a bit.
If you can see the ring here

It takes up almost all of the back wall of the gym, which will give you an indication of the size of the place. Used to be a karate class that used the gym aswell.

So what do you guys suggest is best for self defence then?

I started GKR Karate last year but it wasn't really what I was looking for. Not enough actual combat work and a lot of it didn't seem practical to me. There is a MMA place in the city and I was thinking of giving that a go. They do BJJ, Vale Tudo, Kickboxing etc. Even stick fighting which is interesting.

I'm not really interested in competitive fighting. Just want something to stay in shape and something practical for self defence

Im sure they are all pretty handy in one respect or another.
I did find Aikido very usefull, have been in a couple of situations where people came at me, and in an instant i found myself on top of them after using their momentum to take them to the ground, becomes like a habbit. Yet you dont need to be a great athlete to use it.

Actually, given your location, could I suggest a different discipline. I studied martial arts in China for a while, and if you can find somewhere near you that teaches a Lau style of Kung Fu, also known as KB Kung Fu to westerners.

It originated in the Kong Sai province, and is a very complete discipline. It's teaching include immense body control and mental awareness and in it's latter stages includes the teaching of weaponry training and street defence techniques. Once you progress beyond the beginners stage, all the instructions are in Cantonese, as it has never been taught in English, in order to avoid the diluting of the teachings.
