There's a 10km coming up in April in the Phoenix Park

Well, here we are in a room with two manky hookers and a racist dwarf. I think I'm heading home.

What level are you at? Do you train at the moment, and if so, to what level? What is your general fitness like?

You mention your knees, do you have a problem with your knees, or have you had one in the past?

Where in Ireland are you based, and what type of running are you interested in? What I mean by that is do you intend to train on tarmac, grass, or cross country.

          Also what age are you?

I coach at a boxing club, but do a lot of fitness training as well, and exercise a lot myself. I run between 30 to 60 miles a week at the moment, and mix it in with a lot of endurance work and weights and ring time. If you want to go into a little bit of detail, I may be able to give you a few pointers, but I would recommend you actually calling to someone who can set you a training programme rather than just getting one from the web to be honest. Any trainer worth his or her salt would want to evaluate you before giving you a training regime. If I know where you are based I might know an athletic club in the area that I could point you in the direction of.

How is your own training coming along? Did you convince your mate that training together and outdoors would be benificial to you both?

I took the guy that was looking to up his milage on his first 20 miler with me last week. It was a culture shock to him.

You don't need that much training for a marathon. Just a couple of short runs in the weeks coming up to it and then just do it. That's what I did anyway. Done two, and I'm aiming to do a triathalon this year, just need to learn how to swim first....

That is a ridiculous statement. So if you took a random guy, just get him to do a few short runs in the weeks building up to the marathon, and he will fly through it? You might get away with that if you have a decent level of fitness to start with, but a random Joe Public would run the risk of doing some serious damage to himself doing that, and sometimes the damage would not be apparent until a few years down the line.

hey jaco thanks for all the tips

                  personally ive decent fitness
my knees are bad from pounding pavements when playing footie for years
but theres a group of us doing it ,5 at the moment, and our fitness is very different ranging from very bad to i'd say decent,e x footie players and ex army so were hopin wont take too long to get our fitness up to a half decent level.
we'll probably mix up the training.i.e. grass/tarmac to save on the knees as im not the only one with bad ones.
                  were all early 30's ish..

Hehe. Ok, I was just quoting my own experiences. I play football twice a week, so am of average fitness and no more. I did it with relatively no problems, had never ran over 6 miles before my first one. Your mindset is a massive part of it.

Although maybe I'll have serious damage down the line as you say.

Well I hope you never do.

I agree that mindset is a huge part of it, but what annoyed me was the fact that your words echoed something I have heard elsewhere. I have seen too many lads given bad advice with regards sports and come a cropper. Mainly because they took generic advice onboard and didn't take into account their current range of ability, which of course has led to many injuries, some quite bad.

Plus if you were able to run up to six miles before you started getting ready for it, then you would have been a lot fitter than the average bloke.

Another factor is whether a person runs a marathon just to finish it, or whether they are running it for competitive reasons. With me it is the latter, I am very laid back in most aspects of my life, but when it comes to sports or training, I am hugely competitive, and mostly against myself.

Are you competitive to make up for your lack of height?

No, it's to make up for your lack of height and machismo.
