    Athletics: Gay claims sprint double

    Tyson Gay stormed to victory in the 200 metres to complete the sprint double at the World Championships in Osaka.

    The American came off the bend with a narrow advatange over Usain Bolt and pulled away down the straight to finish well clear of his Jamaican rival in a Championship record time of 19.76 seconds.

    Bolt finished second in 19.91, while Wallace Spearmon - who had been sluggish out of the blocks having earlier false started - claiming the bronze 20.05.

    Gay's success in the longer sprint follows his victory in Sunday's 100m, and opens the door for a treble gold with the 4x100m relay still to come.

    Just spotted this headline on SkySports.com and it made me laugh so i thought i'd share it with you all

    We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so it’s slightly less rude.

          Just believe and you never know what will happen.

          According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

              He's parents obviously aware of his rather silly surname decided to name him after the baddest man on the planet at the time Tyson was born.

                  So true. This is patently the case.

                  I used to love athletics, and especially the 100m and 200m. Now I couldn't give a ****. This is the first time I've not even watched the sprints (I haven't watched any of it). The sport is in a horrible decline from where I'm standing - undermined by endless drug 'scandals' and a lack of star names. In "my day" there were good sprinters missing out in the semis and pretty much every sports fan knew all 8 finalists in these big events.

                  Or am I just being misty-eyed and nostalgic?

                  Look at the line-up for the 1988 Olympic 100m final:

                  Carl Lewis
                  Ben Johnson
                  Robson da Silva
                  Dennis Mitchell
                  Calvin Smith
                  Linford Christie
                  Ray Stewart
                  Desai Williams

                      Yes I realised that as I was typing it. I kinda hoped no-one would pick up on it.

                      To be fair and accurate though, only Ben Johnson, to the best of my knowledge, was a banned drug cheat.

                      Carl Lewis was just dogged by rumours about substance use. Nothing ever proven.

                      Calvin Smith was as clean as you like. Not sure what you're on about with that one.

                      Linford Christie and Dennis Mitchell both failed drug tests in the twilights of their careers - Mitchell a full ten years after the race I cited and Christie when he was in semi-retirement.

                      So in actual fact my point is a valid one.

                        Hahhahaha Shaggy the 1998 final is known throughout athletics as the 'dirtiest race in history'

                        All the records of this era are really not worth the paper they are written on.

                            I assume you mean 1988.

                            "...known throughout athletics"? You mean one IOC committee member said it. Once.

                            Only Ben Johnson was found guilty of cheating after that race. His 'record' obviously doesn't stand but the rest do. Fact. The result stands.

                            The Carl Lewis stuff I'm not interested in. He was cleared of any wrong-doing in 1988.

                            And Calvin Smith?

                            Besides, that race was used merely an example of a superior era for the sport.
