Yes, Barney has been in the PDC for two seasons now. What did we have up till then in the PDC? Taylor domination of the title, it was a one horse race, apart from I think a John Part win in between.Originally posted by ShaggyAlonso View PostI did...say, until Taylor joined the PDC.
By the time Barney defected (just a couple of years ago, wasn't it?), the BDO was as dead as a doornail IMO.
Although darts has improved again as a spectacle, for me nothing will touch the halcyon days of Bristow, John 'Old Stoneface' Lowe, Bob Anderson, Jocky Wilson et al at the Lakeside, Frimley Green.
Atleast in the BDO, you had different winners and it wasn't a one horse race.
Strange how when Barey went to the PDC in his first season he wins the world title.Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'
"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

But all the best players, bar Barneveld, had been at the PDC for ages. Sure, Taylor won it nearly every year and Barney won it at the first attempt but the standard is always far higher than the BDO and it's a better tournament - with or without him.Originally posted by bazza76 View PostYes, Barney has been in the PDC for two seasons now. Part was a lakeside man for years, as was Barney, Sholten and a few others.
I dont realy watch darts as much these days anymore, but I bet alot of them have come from Lakeside.
As Glove has said, money is the most important factor for the players, all the money is at Sky TV, so off they went. Before Sky came along, and for a while after, the Lakeside was the stronger IMO.Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:

Apart from Barnie though, all the recent BDO defecters have all bombed big time. Ritchie Burnett, Steve Beaton, Colin Monk, Ronnie Baxter and a few others, all struggle. Roland Scholten just about holds his own but thats it. Only now, with a few of the young Dutch players crossing over does it look a bit better and it seems to be that most players are now just using the BDO as a stepping stone which is a shame for history it has. It desperatly needs Setanta to step in or the beeb to up its coverage but it doesnt have the money or the channels for that.Bill Oddie, Bill Oddie, put your hands all over my body.

I am actualy surprised that the names you have mentioned did struggle, as they were quality darts players, and did play good darts at the BDO. Barney and Part are doing well though as the last two winners of the world title and being ex BDO breaking Taylors dominance.Originally posted by The Glove View PostApart from Barnie though, all the recent BDO defecters have all bombed big time. But I can not argue against the PDC being the better now and that it needs a revamp to return to the Halcyon days.

Merv King has joined the PDC this year and his quote went along the lines of : I wish I'd done this 5 years ago. In the BDO I was in the top 5 all the time and I never practised, now I practise every day and I struggle to break into the top 30.
Says it all really. I suppose the BDA version is a good warm up ground for young players trying to break through.Originally posted by Gordon Brown
