    Hatton - Mayweather 2

27.03.08 Hatton v Mayweather 2 in the works

Richard Schaefer lets the cat out of the bag:-

Ricky Hatton's dream of meeting Floyd Mayweather for a second time moved a step closer on Thursday when it was revealed the American is considering a rematch at Wembley in spring next year.

Mayweather won the first contest with a 10th-round stoppage in Las Vegas last December but Hatton feels referee Joe Cortez contributed to the only defeat on his 44-fight record.

In reality, Mayweather was comfortably superior throughout the contest and Hatton showed little to suggest a second meeting would provide a different outcome.

The Mancunian's next assignment is against Mexican Juan Lazcano on May 24 while Mayweather is scheduled to resume his rivalry with Oscar De La Hoya on September 20.

But Richard Schaefer, the chief executive of Golden Boy promotions, revealed on Thursday that discussions over luring Mayweather to London have already begun.

"It's very likely that Floyd will come over next spring. Floyd and his manager Al Hayman are very serious about it," said Schaefer.

"The first fight was great and while Floyd would have to get past Oscar first, he knows that Ricky has talked about the referee.

"He wants to show that he will repeat what happened the first time. That's his motivation.

"Floyd realises that Hatton is the most beloved fighter in the world and for him to come over to Wembley Stadium is making history.

"For Ricky it's about challenges and it's the same for Floyd. Fighting in front of 100,000 fans would be huge motivation for Floyd."

Another fight about money and not boxing. Theres nothing it'll tell us about boxing, he'll probably UD De La Hoya this time instead of SD and knockout or UD Hatton so what does it tell us? **** all that we didnt already know.

Fair play to Floyd and Oscar for exploiting the money out there I'd do the same in there position but as a boxing fan I wish they'd just **** off if this is all they're arsed about. I'm not naive enough to think money doesn't play a part but Floyd goes on about his "legacy" all the time so why not fight Cotto to continue his "legacy"? It's not asif he'd be paid a pittance for that one. He'd still get millions allbeit a mill or two less.

A fight with Cotto is what all boxing fans want to see. A fight to say who is the best in the welterweight division. A clash of two styles and a clash of personalities. I don't think this will happen as Floyd is a businessman and has a lot of power in the boxing world. He can hand pick his opponents and make money this way (the easy way we shall say) and not fight the fighters whom he hasn't fought yet.

My first reaction when I heard about this was massive disappointment. What is the point? As Chris said this is only about money. Even Hatton must know the result would be the same, you could see it in his face on the interview on SSNews.

BTW what is this Lazcano (sic) like? Will he give Hatton any problems?

I think you are being a bit harsh on Mayweather bro. I don't think he has hand picked his opponents at all and you only have to look at the opponents he's fought to prove this.

Imo I think Mayweather would deal with Cotto quite comfortably in the end. I think Cotto would come out his explosive self and probably win the first couple of rounds, howver Mayweather is the master at working out his opponents and I think he will do just that and stop Cotto in the later rounds.

Mine too. I read that they are looking at 100,000 in Wembley to watch the fight but surely it won't be that much of a draw after the last one.

It was hardly a close fight and the result would no doubt be the same.

Dont think he's referring to Floyds past, more now supposedly fighting Oscar and Hatton, two people he's already beaten and the Hatton one was comfortable, beating either again proves nothing. Could think of at least 10 fights I'd rather see him in than either of these two. I'd do the same if I was Floyd mind, if I could fight a boxer I've already beaten for more money than a prime unbeaten Miguel Cotto for less money then the big money easy fight is obviously the choice but it doesnt do boxing any good.

In his last three fights he's fought and beaten the linear champions in the Light-Welterweight, Welterweight and Light-Middleweight divisions.

That's hardly picking easy opponents, mate.

I should have written he is now hand picking his opponents since he has beaten champions within a 14lb spread.

                      I get your point
