5-3 is a good score for the opening day. That's 2.5 points per session to us and only 1.5 for them. If week keep this up then I don't see a way back for the Yanks. It could still come down to one of the last matches on Sunday though.
I don't like golf but I might understand at least some of the appeal .
. Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

Well it's a bit of sporting theatre innit.
It's also good to see individuals, who compete against each other constantly, uniting and playing as a team. Also the crowd get to play their part, which in golf is unique; rather than merely applauding players or whooping every now and again for their particular favourite, the crowd roar their approval for their team of choice, adding to the theatre as huge roars regularly go up all over the course.
There's been some incredible drama in Ryder Cups gone by but a non golf fan is never really gonna be able to get into it.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
Thoroughly enjoyed the first day's golf - took the day off and watched most of it throughout the day.
Couldn't believe Tiger's first tee shot into the water this morning - he is human after all!
I personally think Woosie will lead by example - he's a true competitor who's won a major and dozens of tournaments in his time, and a 5-3 start on the first day is good, whilst playing all 12 players too!

its a **** of a game, played by ****s, for ****s, with ****tish kecks
puts on flak hat
What's that you say? You've played it all your life? You also own a course?
The Ryder Cup friggin rules. Gotta love it. So glad we've got a bit of a lead as when it comes down to the singles the Yanks always have the advantage. I do think we'll win again this time around, no sweat.

I can understand all that - makes a lot of sense.
The main barrier for me isn't the game itself I think but the fact that I have no interest whatsoever in the players. I mean, I have played the game, I have a pretty good idea just how hard a game it is and I can appreciate the skill involved since the coverage on telly is very good (unlike say rugby union where most of the stuff that happens is not picked up on and so it's just a big fight with a ball involved somewhere).
I used to think it was the old thing about why bother about twelve millionaires from one continent playing against twelve millionaires from another. Then I realized that that argument could apply to football too these days...
Ultimately I suppose I just don't care - maybe that is down to the game for me.
Anyway, I hope you all enjoy yourselves.

Played it for the first time with some guys from work and some asshole got stroppy with us because we weren't following the rules, like not raking footprints in a bunker that looked like a coach party had walked through it. The whole environment seems slightly prone to elitism/racism etc. with a little bit of sexism thrown in. Good old-fashioned British values from the 30s. Ditto tennis clubs. (Yes, I know they're called rackets. )
