It appears that unbeaten WBC/WBO/WBA super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe is back on the road to retirement. Calzaghe has switched his plans around in the last few weeks, initially stating that he would retire after one more fight and then stating that he would fight a few more times depending on the money. Now Calzaghe has once again made a call for retirement after his next fight, scheduled to take place on November 15.
Welsh boxer Joe Calzaghe says he will retire after one more big pay day.
The super middleweight world champion told the Sheffield Star that his is next and final challenger is likely be the legendary Roy Jones Jnr, in November.
"I want to be one of the few fighters who retires at the right time," he said. "I've had a tremendous career. It's my 11th year as a world champion. So one more big fight and I'll call it a day."
He said a proposed Battle Of Britain clash with Clinton Woods was dashed when the Sheffield boxer lost his IBF light-heavyweight crown last month to Antonio Tarver in Florida.
Calzaghe paid tribute to Woods, describing him as "one of the top light-heavyweights". But the 36-year-olds won't be squaring up.
"It's definitely not going to happen. He got beat - so unfortunately for Clinton, we won't be fighting," he told The Star at an event with fans organised by Habbin Builders, at the Consort Hotel, Rotherham.
Calzaghe said of Jones Jnr: "He is a living legend. What a good way to finish off my career, against him. He's the obvious choice. The good thing now is everyone wants to fight me. For years they all avoided me."
Calzaghe is the latest to join Woods, Junior Witter and others to support The Star's Boxing Against Bullying campaign, which challenges bullying in schools and elsewhere.
Calzaghe, who started boxing aged nine, said: "It's a fantastic campaign. Many people are bullied during their school years. So this is a great campaign by The Star."
