    Brundle in pikey storm

Montreal is known for its comedy, but it was no laughing matter for ITV commentator Martin Brundle after he found himself at the centre of an equality row.

Speaking to F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone during his traditional live interviews prior to the Canadian Grand Prix, Brundle used the word 'pikey' in reference to track repairs that workers had carried out overnight.

Brundle, 49, said: "There are some pikeys there at turn 10 putting tarmac down - what do you think of that?"

The frantic nature of the build-up to the race left both unfazed by the remark, but the Equality and Human Rights Commission, the racial equality watchdog, condemned the phrasing.

A spokesman said: "This word has been used on television in the past and is highly derogatory. They have caused much offence in the past."

The remark came after tarmac began crumbling away from the track during weekend qualifying. Drivers were also quick to pass judgement on the surface saying their lap times were significantly slower.

'Pikey' is as a slang term to gypsies or travellers but has now been coined as a general term for anyone living with no fixed abode.

A spokesman for ITV said: "We apologise for any offence caused by this remark." He added that it was too early to say if there had been any complaints made against Brundle.

Last December, a Sussex gardener is believed to have made legal history when he was convicted of racially aggravated harassment for using the word.

Lee Coleman repeatedly used 'pikey' in a drunken outburst over a nightclub entrance fee. He was given a 12-month community order and told to do 200 hours of unpaid work.

And chef Marco Pierre-White has also been censured for using the expression 'pikey's picnic' on ITV reality show Hell's Kitchen.

I heard that on sunday and thought, **** mate, your gonna get yourself in trouble there. That said I thought it was ****ing funny and only meant in jest. There should be no repercussions. Brundle is quite a good presenter oddly enough.

          class

funny story...when my mum moved over to London back in 01, a pikey knocked at the door and was selling fish. She had only been there a week or two....so she had no idea what pikeys were. Anyway, Michael (her partner) told her never to let Pikeys into the house, and to just say no to whatever they were selling......he obviously didnt tell her how to spot a pikey though

She lets this bloke in with the fish, and then calls Michael at work, asking if he wanted some Michael says down the other end " oh ****, you haven't let him in have you!!", mums reply......"yes, he's in the lounge room. Dont worry, i asked him if he was a pikey....he said no"

"looking through your posts since 2007 and what you have consistently written about my football team I have come to the conclusion that if you had 1 more brain cell you would be a plant .. your father was a hamster and your mother smells of elder berries, I fart in your general direction ..." Do Pikeys (sorry I mean Gypo's) pay their TV Licence?

They must be difficult to track down.
              Oh I don't know.

Just because a group of people aren't defined by skin colour or nationality it doesn't mean that demonising them with generalisations is any less offensive.

That said I don't think Brundle should lose his job over it but he should be told what an idiot he is.

Eloquently phrased and I think totally correct.
                        .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.
