Anderson Silva Moves To 205 On July 19 Ufc

    - ANDERSON SILVA MOVES TO 205 ON JULY 19 UFC
Tuesday, June 17, 2008 - by Ken Pishna - MMAWeekly.com (Reporting by Damon Martin)

While everyone else is headed down, Anderson Silva is on his way up.

Although the Ultimate Fighting Championship has yet to make its own official announcement, company president Dana White on Tuesday confirmed to Dave Meltzer of Yahoo Sports that there will indeed be a July 19 UFC event that will air on Spike TV.

According to Meltzer, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva will headline the event, though there is an added twist. He will not be defending his belt.

While most fighters today are dropping down as many weight categories as they possibly can, the champ is headed up. Silva will make the move to light heavyweight, temporarily, without relinquishing his middleweight belt, to face James Irvin.

Contacted by MMAWeekly.com, Irvin on Tuesday confirmed the bout, saying that he had just received the contract and finalized the deal earlier in the day. Although other possible match-ups had been discussed, including one with Wanderlei Silva, Irvin was excited for the bout with Anderson Silva.

There had been much speculation in recent weeks that Silva would move to the 205-pound division, but no one really expected it to come at this juncture. Most speculation for a possible July 19 card centered on a main event with some combination of Brandon Vera, Wanderlei Silva, or Dan Henderson.

In his comments to Meltzer, White indicated that Silva would still defend his 185-pound divisional title later in the year, but indicated a future bout with former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell could be in the works if all goes well on July 19.

In addition to Silva vs. Irvin, a bout between Hermes Franca and Frankie Edgar, initially planned for Aug. 9 in Minneapolis, is being relocated to the July event at the Palms in Las Vegas.

The bout will be Franca’s first since returning from suspension for a positive test for steroids in California.

The UFC’s July 19 is a counter move to Affliction’s planned mixed martial arts promotional debut, also on July 19, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. Affliction “Banned” features a main event of Fedor Emelianenko vs. Tim Sylvia, carrying a suggested price tag of $39.95 on pay-per-view.

Should be an interesting fight this. I expect Silva to stop Irvin in the second, just as he did with Dan Henderson former Pride Light Heavyweight champion

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

Good reporting as ever Bazza, I missed this article, many thanks.

Should be interesting. Hermes Franca vs Frankie Edgar should be a good fight as well!

On a side note. Rumours are doing the rounds that Zuffa has sold the UFC to a "media company" and that an announcement will be made today.

Yeah the Franca V Edgar fight should be a good one, would tend to lean towards Franca on this one.
Also as we have talked about before. Fedor V Sylvia seems to be happening, which should be interesting to say the least.

          Also.
205 lbs.: Brandon Vera (8-2) vs. Reese Andy (7-1)

Vera coming down to Light Heavy after two straight defeats in the Heavyweight division, just like Bisping, it will be a good move for Vera, and he will now be considered a real threat in the 205 division.
This will be on the under card on July 19th along with the Franca fight.

Fedor vs Sylvia has been confirmed for a month or 2 now, The Affliction card that night is really good actually.

            Here's some info....

Kicking off the night with “Affliction Live” on FSN is the U.S. debut of Russian heavyweight Aleksander Emelianenko, brother of Fedor Emelianenko, against tough Texan brawler Paul Buentello, of Amarillo, and Brazilian Antonio Rogerio “Minotoro” Nogueira against veteran Vernon “Tiger” White, fighting out of Palo Alto, Calif.

Then, live on pay-per-view, “Affliction Banned” features the much-anticipated return of the former undisputed Pride heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko, who takes on former two-time Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight titleholder Tim Sylvia, fighting out of Iowa by way of his native Maine, in the main event.

The co-feature of the night will match former UFC heavyweight titleholder Andrei Arlovski, fighting out of Chicago by way of Belarus, facing International Fight League veteran Ben Rothwell of Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The PPV continues with three more showdowns as Josh Barnett of Seattle, faces off stateside for the first time in two years in a grudge match against the only opponent to ever knock him out, Brazilian Pedro Rizzo; three-time All-American wrestler Mike Whitehead of Salt Lake City battles Brazilian sensation Renato “Babalu” Sobral of Costa Mesa, Calif.; and 2000 Olympic Wrestling Silver Medalist and Oregon House of Representatives candidate Matt Lindland meets Brazilian Fabio “Negao” Nascimento.

Finally, for those in attendance at the Honda Center, the off television swing bouts will feature light-heavyweights Terry Martin of Chicago vs. Vitor Belfort from Brazil, and Justin Levens of Laguna Niguel, Calif. vs. unbeaten San Diego prospect Patrick Speight; welterweight JJ Ambrose of Lakewood, Calif. vs. Mike Pyle of Las Vegas; and lightweight Savant Young of Lakewood vs. Mark Hominick, representing Ontario, Canada.

Irvin is sh*t. Whats the point?

"If Gerrard continues to play up front, leaving this lack of creativity and intelligence in Midfield, the season WILL be over by Xmas."

I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

I wouldn't say **** is quite the word.
I remember not so long ago, there were quite a few people who were making out that Houston Alexander was THE next big thing, I didn't agree personally, anyway, Irvin got a TKO over Alexander in his last fight, which would have been a shock to many, he seems to be in good form and is not he pushover everyone thinks.
If you think Irvin got lucky against Alexander, then I guess you can say, he also has a punchers chance against Silva.

The point is also to distract attention from the Affliction fight and break Silva's cherry in the Light Heavyweight Division.

I think there was a little fortune in Alexanders fight, but thats the type of fighter he is, all out, it was only a matter of time before he got beat. I still think there's a lot more to come from Houston.

What you will see from Houston is a couple of more knockouts, then, as soon as he gets near the top of the pile again, he will get beat by a more rounded opponent.

Looks like we could see him back at Middleweight sooner than expected too.

UFC 88: Anderson Silva vs Yushin Okami title fight still possible

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva turned quite a few heads in the past 24 hours with news that the Brazilian accepted a light heavyweight fight against James Irvin at UFC Fight Night 14 at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 19.

As we reported yesterday, win or lose Silva will retain his 185-pound belt. And he is not vacating it as some have suggested — he’s merely taking a temporary leave of absence because his boss, UFC President Dana White, asked him if he’s up for the challenge.

Here’s a snip from Silva on the decision to take the fight on short notice via SI.com:

“If the UFC asks me to do something, and it’s within my capability to do so, I’m going to do it. I feel like I’m part of the UFC family and the head of the family asked me to fight. I’m in condition to fight, my coaches say I can fight — I’m going to fight. I want to do whatever I can to help make UFC the No. 1 event around the world like it is.”

If he can escape the bout against Irvin injury-free, White might also put in another request: Defend his middleweight title against number one contender Yushin Okami at UFC 88: “Breakthrough” at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga., less than seven weeks later on September 6.

It’s a fight that needs to happen because Okami is the last man to defeat “Spider” at Rumble on the Rock (ROTR) 8 back in 2006. However, Silva was disqualified for an illegal up kick, which he has since attributed to a misinterpretation of the rules.

He’ll likely come fired up to clear up any confusion.

Okami has won six of seven fights inside the Octagon — his only blip during that span is a unanimous decision loss to former middleweight champion, Rich Franklin, at UFC 72: “Victory” back in June 2007. He has a patient and effective style that could cause some problems for the champion, who has not gone past round two since 2004.

It would be nice to find out … that’s for sure. Stay healthy, Anderson.

Speaking a bit of sense here is big John, pity he is retired now
Quote of the Day: Big John McCarthy

“I mean, look at that fight. You got your middleweight champion (Anderson Silva), you’re moving up to light-heavyweight to fight James Irvin. What good does that do for him? I mean, (UFC president) Dana (White) feels … obviously he feels there is some competition there with Affliction. He wants to try to do something to damage Affliction. That’s why he is doing this. I look at it and it’s bad for the sport, it’s bad for the fans. There needs to be more than the one promotion.

“The UFC is the big one on the block. I would never say anything differently until anything really comes about. But to sit there and try to shove a show in on the same date to say come watch. It’s the same thing they did with the Chuck Liddell special (on Spike TV) the same night as the (EliteXC) fights on CBS. It’s like, come on. The sport is big enough to where there can be more than one. There needs to be more than one. The UFC has what 200 fighters signed or 250 fighters? You know what, there are a whole lot more fighters thana that in this world and they need jobs. So there needs to be the other promotions.

“Thank God, Affliction is doing what they are doing and putting together … honestly, I’m not saying it to say it, it is the best card with heavyweights that has ever been put together by any organization in, at least North America, and probably in the world ever. You’ve got three ex-UFC champions (Tim Sylvia, Josh Barnett and Andre Arlovski). You’ve got the ex-PRIDE champion in Fedor (Emelianenko) and you have other guys. You have Matt Lindland, Vitor Belfort, Mike Whitehead against Renato ‘Babalu’ (Sobral). You’ve got some great fights there. It’s going to be a hell of a card. Go and watch the one live and TiVo the UFC show. That’s what I’m going to do. I will TiVo the UFC show.”

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.
