England's selectors will name the squad for the final Test against South Africa at a news conference at 1300 BST.

And BBC Sport understands Michael Vaughan may not be captain for The Oval after a poor run of form with the bat and three defeats in five series.

The 1300 announcement is certain to be significant. Usually, in the middle of a series, England squads are announced via a simple media release.

Vaughan may have chosen to resign his position, at least temporarily.

The selectors are unlikely to have sacked him permanently with one match to go in the series, and he may seek to regain his form at domestic level with a view to being captain again for the winter tours.

South Africa clinched a 2-0 series win with one to play with a five-wicket victory at Edgbaston on Saturday.

And England team managing director Hugh Morris did not guarantee the position of out-of-form captain Michael Vaughan.

I'm not so sure though. I'd make Strauss captain or even Flintoff, but his past history will count against him

Really feel for Vaughan, that was tough. The right decision though.

People can say what they like about Vaughan, but he has been the best captain England have had for years, his relationship with Fletcher was scrutinised on occassions but without it we would not have won the Ashes. Some inspired fielding postions and background work on certain players, particularly Hayden, Ponting and Gilchrist.

His batting has never been the same since he took the captaincy, hopefully he will go back to county cricket and earn a place in the England side on merit to silence his recent critics.

Will be interesting to see whether KP picks his "mates" for the Oval or whether he shakes things up a bit. He really should. Bopara should get a go, preferably instead of Vaughan who needs to regain form. The bowling needs a shake up as well. Flintoff should be played as a genuine allrounder with 4 other bowlers; Panesar and 3 other seamers. Broad should come in and should not have been dropped in the first place. England need to drop this obsession with swing bowling as well. Did the Saffer bowlers swing it much in this series? Nope. It only ends up with Darren Pattinson type selections. That really was the beginning of the end for Vaughan.
