BUPA Great North Run 2008 (half marathon)

I wasn't really sure where the best place to put this was, and apologies for the shameless nature of the request.

Anyway, I'm doing the BUPA Great North Run this year to try and raise money for Alzheimer's Society. Its a cause very close to my heart, as I'm sure it is to many others on this forum.

A bit of background. My Gran passed away last March having been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease 12 years earlier. Anyone who has been close to anyone suffering Alzheimer's will be aware of the impact that this disease has on not only the sufferer but also the wider family. My Grandad, who was 80 when she was diagnosed, spent the 12 years as her carer. This would have been impossible had it not been for the support of the Alzheimer's Society and its affiliates. They operated as a constant support network to him and offered a fantastic degree of help, for example she was taken to local centres twice a week to make sure he could rest and have time to recuperate as well as the advice and guidance they offered throughout her illness.

I wanted to do something to try and raise some money for them last year but unfortunately was ill myself at the time. However this year I will be doing the run in memory of my gran and representing the Society.

I want to raise as much as possible so if anyone feels that they want to support this cause I would be grateful for whatever they can give. On a slightly lighter side its the first time I've ever attempted anything like this and the people who have ever played sports with or against me over the years find the whole idea rather amusing. Who knows what will happen.

As it is training is going well. I'm up to 10 mile runs (done in about an hour fifteen) once a week and I do 8 miles at least twice a week, as well as regular gym work. I'm hoping to do the 13.1 miles in under 1:45.

So again I apologise for the inappropriateness of this but, as stated, anything that anyone can contribute will be more than gratefully received. My just giving page is at the link below

    Thanks

    Rowan
A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

Cheers mate, i appreciate it. It is a great cause and it's amazing when you speak to people how many have family members who are sufferers and it looks bleaker for the future. Plus after everything that has been done for my family anything that can be raised, no matter how small, will make the training and aching legs more than worth it.
