Calzaghe calls off Jones Jr bout

Calzaghe calls off Jones Jr bout

Joe Calzaghe's planned September super-fight with Roy Jones Jr in New York has been called off.

Calzaghe's camp have confirmed to BBC Sport that the unbeaten Welshman has injured his right hand in training and will not be ready.

It was announced last week that the 36-year-old was to meet American great Jones Jr at Madison Square Gardens on 20 September.

A new date for the light-heavyweight clash has yet to be decided.

The New York bout was due to be Calzaghe's first self-promoted showdown since his split from his long-term manager Frank Warren.

But Calzaghe, who has a long-history of persistent hand injuries, has been forced to withdraw after hurting his hand in training.

The two-weight world champion fought through the pain of a hand injury to demolish Jeff Lacy to unify the IBF and his WBO crown in March 2006.

Calzaghe impressed on his American debut as he came back from a first round knock-down to beat Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas in April.

The Jones jnr clash was set to be Calzaghe's last before the Newbridge fighter retires from his 15-year professional boxing career.

Calzaghe, unbeaten in 45 bouts, was king of the super-middleweight division - holding the WBC, WBA and WBO titles - but The Ring light-heavyweight crown he won by beating Hopkins was to be on the line against four-weight world champion Jones.
    We come not to play.

They don't want to sign on the dotted line to a washed up boxer who will take his unbeaten streak

I Know, it's a shame. He's had lots of problems with hand injuries, makes what he's achieved all the more incredible really. He'll for sure be fighting RJ.jr after he recovers, he's promoting & fighting, so he'll earn a sack full, I have no doubt the fight will take place.

        Unbeaten in 45 Bouts.

What part of that second bit led you to conclude the first bit?

I know it's fashionable in this country to slag off our sports people but this guy has dominated a division for a decade and then stepped up to beat another guy unbeaten for 10 years.

Should fight Pavlik rather than getting his dad to come out and say Pavlik isn't good enough. If he isn't good enough just whip his ass. I wish Enzo would fight Pavlik

A division which hasn't been exactly competitive. Now is the chance to fight Pavlik, one of the P4P boxers around yet he dodges him to fight a 40 year old has-been from the 90s.

Pavlik v Calzaghe would be a great final fight for Joe, and I would give hime very chance of winning. Joe always produces that bit extra when needed and a win over Pavlik would cement his status as an all time great.
