To swim (at olympic standards) in as many strokes and distances as Phelps does, and not only compete....but blow away his opposition is incredible.

Those saying swimming is easier.....ahh, how bout you go to a pool and try swim "butterfly" for 50m...i bet you any money that you wont last 20m Anyone can run 100m flat out...its not hard. You may not be able to run at Bolt's speed, but i guarantee you can do it.

Swimming requires an incredible amount of stamina, much much more than running. Anyone that disagrees has never swum (hard) before. Swimming 100m non stop, fast as you can will leave you absolutely gasping

I can only fully agree with this.

I started swimming at the age of 3 in the Berlin Olympia swimming pool and continued for the next 13 years. Swimming is an incredible sport and much harder than anyone who doesn't do it imagines.

In swimming, every muscle is in contant motion, in my opinion. It takes HUGE amounts of training, completely different styles of training to get anywhere near the levels Phelps swims at.

In my opinion, 100m runners are done in under 10 seconds, the margin is so much smaller, we're talking 100th of a second determining between success and failure.

In swimming, there are 'tactics' so to speak, the breathing, the number of armstrokes until you breath again, the different levels of power you exert at certain stages during 200m/400m etc. , especially in the medley races.

I swam competively for years and I have to say, I love swimming, I ****ed my body so many times running/footballing/you name it, but I've never injured myself swimming, I've never hurt myself or tore muscles or ****ed knees or anything, my back never hurt, and I still believe swimmers have the best shaped bodies, are in supreme physical condition (100% from head to toe).

Anyway, don't know why I posted this, just thought I'd back up the 'less-glamourous' swimmers here.

When I watch the 100m, I think it's like a selection of rap stars and 'Look at me' guys, I'm not belittling any of their achievements, but I got this feeling every one of them had some sort of image to live up to, whereas every swimmer I've watched seems very humble and non-glamourous. I like that.

On a side-note, I would like to add something.

On www.spiegel.de I read an article 2 days ago where a German sprinter highlights how bad the drugs tests in Jamaica are.

For instance, the whole Jamaican team has only been drug-tested 6 (!!!) times this year, whereas a German athlete (can't remember if it was shot putting or something like that got tested 29(!) this year.

Now at first, when I read the article I just thought 'sour grapes', which to be fair, is probably true.

However it did got me thinking about Bolt's achievment, especially when I then watched the 200m race and the warm-up Bolt did where he looks like someone who knows he's definitely not going to fail and doing all his acrobatics and what-not and giving it large...it just seemed like he was very pumped up.

Anyways, I'm not going to start accusing anyone of anything and I really find his running style remarkable, he's my height and I can well imagine that this height can lead to serious advantage, given proper training methods.

A phenomenal achievement by both athletes and it really lit up the Olympics, albeit I honestly didn't see a lot of them (I also think that the German fella who won the weight lifting deserved Gold the most, his beautiful wife dead, **** me I feel so much empathy for him, when I saw it, I nearly cried)

            Anyway, rock on

my wife swam competitively for years and her stories of the training really make it seem like a sport utterly devoid of fun or enjoyment and solely populated by ****in psycho coaches.

To an extent, that is true, which is the reason I gave up the sport at 16...I had a life to live (especially seeing as I was in Germany at the time)

I only went 2-3 times a week and had my competitions at the weekends/every fortnight. So I wasn't doing the regimented swimming boarding school type things, wake up at 6, swim at 6.30, breakfast at 7.30, school at 8, swim at lunch-time, madness that is!

However, I fully enjoyed the sport in itself, taking out all the politics, I really did have a great time and an incredibly healthy and fit body, and what I liked most of all, above any other general sport was the sound:

Bubbles and breathing, even at a huge contest, once you're in the water, there's just you, the breathing, the water, a very nice way of meditating, no coaches could scream loud enough, no crowds could go ballistic enough, just the water and you on your own. Very satisfying!

(For those regimentors out there, sorry for going off-topic!

I have a new found respect for swimming after this Olympics. I can't swim that well (I hate putting my head under the water) but since living in Aus I have made a point of learning so I can at least stay afloat!

I am 6'5" tall, my armspan is wider than I am tall and I have a very long body. Shame I swim like a domestic cat.

You think the training to become a Olympic sprint champion would be fun? To win any race event where your body is the egine you have to train hard and repetitively.

Anyone see the women's BMX races.
I know that Shanaze Reade crashed out but what guts she has and it was so obvious it was gold or nothing. The power she showed out of the blocks and her determination could easily see her moving over to the track events.

Why not Rugby or Darts? Bare knuckle boxing?

                          Or skipping and hopscotch?

I'd love to see the Red Bull flying as an Olympic sport

why shouldn't BMX be an olympic sport its a form of cycling, likewise mountain biking. They have to train and be at thier physical best to win.

whereas sport fishing isn't quite a form of swimming

I hear the colonials down under are spitting out their dummies because we are above them in the medals table.

Apparently we are only good at sports that involve sitting down
