    Great North Run

    Just starting now.

Listening to some of the heart warming stories and stories of courage it really does get you thinking.

Maybe I should do more charity stuff - anyone else think they should do more?

Got to applaud everyone doing it for a cause.

If I can get a few of my mates to agree I'm in for next year. Gulp.

Cheers mate. I made it round in 1:46 so not a great time. I'll take it for my first crack at a half marathon. The whole day was great. Lots of very good causes represented. I didn't get to meet Akabussi, which was a bit of a disappointment. I did get a high five from Tony Blair though. Well I went high, he went low. I'll definitely be doing it again next year.
A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

All good and well done to people who have done this, but why do we need to have 4 hours or whatever of this ****e on TV on Sunday morning.

That's a respectable time indeed! Well done fella!

Running isn't really my bag, but me and a few mates are cycling across Scotland and back for charity taking in about 350+ miles next year.

I'm looking forward to raising some money, but some people don't appreciate the training that goes with it. I nearly threw up running last Saturday.

Fair play to you mate. 350 miles will be some feat. Is it a continuous thing or are you allowed to have breaks?

I only trained for 3 months but was up to about 30 miles a week towards the end. I've just worked out what I need to do if I want between 1:31 and 1:36 next year. I need to clock between 8.5 and 9mph for the first 10 miles. then I can slow down to about 8ish. It's going to be a tough year training and I've already entered a few 10K's to get me race ready. Its all going to be for a good cause though so I can't really complain.

The three of us are going from Dundee-to-Lochgilphead. We're basically cycling between two pubs and we're going to have a leaving party in one (the night before we set off) and an arrival party in other. With all proceeds going to a charity that provides underprivileged/neglected kids some presents at Christmas.

We're hoping to get some coverage in the media as we all have mates in the local radio/papers as well as good contacts to some businesses that are keen to tie up. All sounds promising thus far, but I'm aware there'll be a fair amount of work to do. We've set a month of August, but we've lots to do between now and then (nevermind the training).

We're going the short way across which is about 130 in a oner, and on the long way back we'll stop over somewhere as it's 200miles plus.

After a while you do get really into training and the mini-targets you set yourself. 1.30 is a ****ing awesome time... like i said running ain't my thing though i enjoy short distances of 5/6. Good luck for the training... take some time off in the winter though!

Staying out of the pub is my hardship. There's a gig in town tonight, but i need to go to the gym instead... Hard decision! That said, when you know a charity and a good cause is reliant on you it becomes an easier choice to make as you don't want to letting people down.

My 46 year old manager came in in 1:35 this year so I need to be able to beat him next year. Quite a few of my workmates were in Shields for the finish and most of them were fairly quick to point out that they had seen him come in 10 minutes before me. I resisted the urge to point out I would have liked to see them do a 13 mile run in 1:46 but was forced to accept that I need to be quicker. I was unlucky though. I put gel in soles in my old trainers on the morning of the run as my new ones hadn't been broken in soon enough for me to run in them. I started blistering on 4 miles and by 10 couldn't feel my right foot. I've already been out and got my winter running gear as well just to make sure I definately keep things up over christmas.

I was always going to run again next year but wasn't planning on doing it for charity again. After this this year I don't think I couldn't do the charity bit. It was probably one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. Your right about the motivational part as well. Alzheimers Society had a cheering station at about 10 miles and when I went past they really helped spur me on for the last stretch. I managed to raise about £600 and I've never seen a group more grateful than the reps I met on sunday.

You did well not to punch them in the face! I'm not being patronising when i say 1:46 is a great time all things considered.

I was going to run the Aviemore HM this year (in two weeks), but a bad ankle injury put me out almost 10 weeks. I was gutted. However had i trained for it, i'd have been happy with 1:46. My training mate is now starting to have provisional thoughts about the full 'M'... Will never happen for me, i just have to mention running and i get crocked.
